MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team prepares for the trip to Montana this weekend before coming home for their five-match home stand in the Frontier Conference action.
(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) (9-3 overall record, 5-2 Frontier) visits MSU-Northern (7-6 overall record, 5-2 Frontier) Friday evening at Armory Gymnasium (1040 West 3
rd Street) in Havre, Mont. The match is set for 8 p.m. (Central Time)/7 p.m. (Mountain Time).
The Trojans then travel to Great Falls, Mont., Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (CT)/2 p.m. (MT) to take on the conference's leader No. 4 ranked Providence (Mont.) (14-1 overall record, 7-0 Frontier). The match takes place at McLaughlin Center Gymnasium (1415 20
th Street S).
Dakota State wraps up their first half of Frontier Conference schedule with a pair of matches at DSU Fieldhouse next week. The Trojans host Valley City State (N.D.) next Wednesday evening (Oct. 1) for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night at 6 p.m. DSU hosts Mayville State (N.D.) next Thursday evening (Oct. 2) for Parents' Night. There will be a junior varsity match at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m.
Dakota State closes out four-match home stand undefeated
Dakota State closed out their Frontier Conference four-match home stand undefeated against Montana schools, sweeping all four matches with 3-0 sweeps at DSU Fieldhouse.
The Trojans began their four-match home stand with victories over (RV) Carroll (Mont.) and Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on the weekend of Sept. 12-13. DSU followed up with another 3-0 sweeps against Montana Western and No. 19 ranked Montana Tech last weekend, improving the Trojans' home record to 4-1.
Dakota State averaged 17.4 kills per set during their undefeated four-match home stand and held their opponents to 10.8 kills per set. The Trojans also hit .254 during that stretch compared to the opponents .149 hitting percentage. DSU added 17 service aces and averaged 21.9 digs per set during the home stand.
Two Trojans earn first ever Frontier Conference Players-of-the-Week awards
Two Dakota State (S.D.) athletes earned their first ever Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference Volleyball Players-of-the-Week awards Monday. DSU highlighted with a pair of 3-0 home sweeps over Montana Western and No. 19 ranked Montana Tech.
Macey Wathen, a junior middle hitter, was selected as the Attacker-of-the-Week. She posted double digits kills and committed just one attack error last weekend for the Trojans. She averaged 3.8 kills per set and produced an astounding .564 hitting percentage. She added two blocks for the week.
M. Wathen ranks fourth in the Frontier Conference in hitting percentage with .347 for DSU.
Maddi Langerock, a senior setter, was named as the Setter-of-the-Week. She fueled the Trojans' offense attack with 76 set assists, averaging 12.7 assists per set. She ranks second in the NAIA and leads Frontier Conference with 12.7 assists per set. Langerock posted a double-double of 42 assists and 14 digs in DSU's victory over nationally ranked Orediggers.
Opponent Breakdown & Context
- MSU-Northern: MSU-Northern is coming off from their four-match winning streak with an overall record of 7-6 and 5-2 record in the Frontier Conference. The Skylights defeated Valley City State (N.D.) 3-1 and Mayville State (N.D.) 3-0 on Sept. 12-13 in Havre. MSU-N rallied back to defeat Dickinson State (N.D.) in five sets on Sept. 19, followed by a 3-0 road sweep at Bismarck State (N.D.) on Sept. 20. DSU and MSU-N is 1-1 record in all-time series meeting, with DSU winning the last meeting on Aug. 31, 2019, held in the Arizona Christian tournament.
- #4 Providence (Mont.): No. 4 Providence (Mont.) is the lone Frontier Conference team to be undefeated in league play with a 7-0 record. The Argos are 14-1 overall record after extending their winning streak to 13 matches. UP swept Bismarck State and Dickinson State last weekend on the road. Providence's last setback was on Aug. 22 when they fell to current No. 1 ranked Eastern Oregon in three straight sets. Dakota State and Providence will be meeting for the first time in series meeting.
- Valley City State (N.D.): The Vikings began their season with the receiving votes recognition in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll. VCSU is coming off from the 1-3 record on their Montana trip, with the victory coming at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Sept. 17. Valley City State lost to MSU-Northern, Providence, and Carroll during their trip. Both DSU and VCSU split their two meetings last season, with each team winning on their own home court.
- Mayville State (N.D.): Mayville State (N.D.) also went 1-3 record during their trip to Montana, recording their first Frontier Conference win of the season at Rocky Mountain on Sept. 18. The Comets returned home on Sept. 23, falling short to NCAA Division III Concordia (Minn.) in five-set thriller. Dakota State swept the season series meeting with Mayville State last season, including home-and-away series and the quarterfinals of the North Star Athletic Association postseason tournament. DSU is on a five-match winning streak in the series with MSU.
Dakota State in the NAIA and Frontier ranks
- Trojans' offensive attack: Maddi Langerock ranks second in the NAIA and leads the Frontier Conference in assists per set, averaging 11.46 set assists per set for Dakota State. She is currently fourth all-time in the DSU volleyball record book with 2,444 career assists. The Trojans lead the nation and league in kills per set with 15.1 kills per set prior to this weekend's matches. DSU is also eighth in the NAIA with .246 hitting percentage. Macey Wathen leads the team with .347 hitting percentage, which is fourth in the Frontier Conference. Sophie Tuttle leads the conference with 3.58 kills per set, while her teammate Tristyn Maras is third in the league with 3.29 kills per set.
- DSU's defense: Kate VanRooyan ranks fourth in the Frontier Conference with 5.03 digs per set for Dakota State. The Trojans are second in the conference and 10th in the NAIA with 18.54 digs per set.
