Dakota State (S.D.) falls in four sets to Skylights in Frontier volleyball action

HAVRE, Mont. – (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) battled through four tight sets on the road Friday evening but came up short against Montana State-Northern, falling 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 18-25) in a Frontier Conference clash at Armory Gymnasium.  The Trojans' four-match winning streak came to an end.
Set-by-Set Highlights
  • Set 1 (22-25, MSUN): The Skylights opened strong with 21 kills on .314 hitting compared to the Trojans' 11 kills.
  • Set 2 (25-23, DSU): Dakota State clawed back, highlighted by three blocks and clutch swings late from Sophie Tuttle and Lauryn Kloth to tie the match.
  • Set 3 (19-25, MSUN): MSUN regained control, using three service aces and outhitting the Trojans .294 to .128.
  • Set 4 (18-25, MSUN): The Skylights pulled away late, riding balanced production from their front line to seal the match.
Match Summary
The Trojans (9-4 overall, 5-3 Frontier) grabbed momentum in the second set to even the match, but the Skylights (8-6, 6-2 Frontier) controlled the third and fourth frames behind an efficient offense and a steady back row presence.

MSU-Northern finished the night with 61 kills on a .229 hitting percentage compared to DSU's 46 kills on .122 hitting.
Trojan Highlights
  • Sophie Tuttle led the Trojans' attack with 12 kills, hitting .162 while adding a block assist.
  • Lauryn Kloth was efficient in the middle, collecting nine kills on a .348 clip with a solo block and three block assists for 11.5 points.
  • Maddi Langerock posted 28 set assists, seven kills on .467 hitting, and 10 digs.
  • Macey Wathen tallied seven kills, eight digs, and a service ace.
  • Tristyn Maras and Kloth combined for seven block assists as DSU totaled seven team blocks.
  • Defensively, Kate VanRooyan anchored the back row with 20 digs, while Sydney Wathen and Reagan VanRooyan chipped in 10 and 11 digs, respectively.
Dakota State also recorded three service aces (two from K. VanRooyan, one from M. Wathen) and 78 team digs on the night.
Skylights Leaders
Montana State-Northern countered with a balanced attack:
  • Macee Selman dished out 23 assists and chipped in 13 kills for a double-double.
  • Lexi Jones was dominant at the net, striking 11 kills on a blistering .714 hitting percentage.
  • Josie Hasler contributed nine kills and 18 digs.
  • Defensively, MSUN finished with 91 digs and eight service aces.
Next Up
Dakota State heads to Great Falls, Mont., to take on the Frontier Conference's leader No. 4 ranked Providence (Mont.), who remained undefeated in league play.  The match is set for 3 p.m. (Central Time)/2 p.m. (Mountain Time).
