DICKINSON, N.D. – Leading by just three points at halftime (37-34), No. 4 ranked Dakota State (S.D.) exploded for 34 third-quarter points and 53-16 second-half points to continue their dominance of Dickinson State (N.D.) after a 90-50 victory. The Trojans concluded their season high six-game Frontier Conference women's basketball road trip at Scott Gymnasium Saturday evening, wrapping up their first half portion of the 22-game conference schedule.
Dakota State earned their 22
nd straight victory in the series meeting with Dickinson State since Jan. 5, 2018. The Trojans lifted their overall record to 14-3 and 9-2 record in the Frontier Conference. Dickinson State fell to 4-11 overall record and 2-9 record in the league.
How it happened
The Trojans trailed 20–18 after the opening quarter, but steadily seized control in the second period and then completely broke the game open after halftime. Dakota State outscored Dickinson State 34–12 in the third quarter and 19–4 in the fourth, holding the host Blue Hawks to just 16 total points over the final 20 minutes.
After Dickinson State briefly held a 20–18 lead at the end of the first quarter, Dakota State surged ahead late in the second. DSU carried a 37–34 lead into halftime and never looked back.
Tabor Teel, Mackenzi Simmons and
Hamtyn Heinz each buried three-pointers early in the third quarter as DSU quickly pushed the margin into double figures, and
Angelina Chapple controlled the paint during a decisive run that turned a close game into a runaway.
By the numbers
DSU's Teel led all scorers with 19 points, adding 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals for a double-double.
Angelina Chapple came off the bench with a huge effort, pouring in career high 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting with a career high nine rebounds and a block.
Dakota State's depth was on full display as eight different players scored at least six points. Heinz and Simmons each added nine points, while
Cierra Watkins and
Caitlin Dyer chipped in eight points apiece.
Madala Hanson contributed six points and two assists, while DSU finished with 22 assists on 35 made field goals.
Dickinson State was led by Kaylin Garza's 13 points, while Kyrie Alldredge added nine and Anhelica Shanrock finished with eight. The Blue Hawks shot just 36.4 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from three-point range, while committing 21 turnovers and scoring only 16 bench points.
Dakota State shot an efficient 46.7 percent from the field (35-of-75 field goals) and knocked down 12 three-pointers, while forcing 21 Dickinson State turnovers and scoring 21 points off those miscues. DSU also dominated the glass, 46–31, and outscored DiSU 46–16 in bench points.
