YANKTON, S.D. – A pair of Dakota State (S.D.) pentathlon athletes had stellar performances with personal records, school records, and national qualifying marks Friday on the first day of the Mount Marty (S.D.) Invitational and Multi's at Ruth Donohoe Fieldhouse.
Amelie Steins and
Casey Olson each competed in pentathlon with five different events. They kicked off with the 60-meter dash.
Steins was the fastest runner in the 60-meters with a time of 9.03 seconds, collecting 904 points toward to the pentathlon standings. Olson posted a personal record time of 9.59 seconds to earn 791 points.
Olson added a career best, 1.54 meters (5 feet, .5 inches) in the high jump for the Trojans. She earned 666 points. Steins cleared the season-best height of 1.48 meters (4 feet, 10.25 inches) to tally 599 points.
The third event of the pentathlon was the shot put. Olson was the top thrower with 11.90 meters mark (39 feet, .5 inches) for 654 points. Steins added 9.92 meters (32 feet, 6.5 inches) for 524 points.
Steins leaped a new school record and NAIA 'B' national qualifying mark in the long jump for Dakota State. She recorded 5.63 meters (18 feet, 5.75 inches), the top long jumper in the field with 738 points. She broke a 26-year-old school record held by Tonya Olson with 5.49 meters (18 feet) in 2000.
Olson produced a personal record 5.01 meters (16 feet, 5.25 inches), which was the second-best jump mark in the event. She collected 562 points before heading to the final event of the pentathlon.
Steins finished with a time of 2 minutes, 50.72 seconds in the 800-meter run for DSU. Olson had a personal record time of 2:55.73 for 406 points.
Steins won the pentathlon title with a new school record of 3,221 points. She broke her previous school record of 3,164 points last season. Olson followed up with a runner-up finish with a career best 3,079 points. Her pentathlon total is the second most in DSU women's indoor track & field school history, breaking her previous high of 2,578 points last season.
Steins is currently No. 9 in the NAIA's pentathlon after Friday's meet, while Olson is No. 14. The top 16 pentathlon athletes, which will be declared after the conference championships in mid-February, will compete at the national meet on March 5-7 in Gainesville, Fla.
DSU also competed in the distance medley relay Friday. The team members of
Lindsey Roth,
RayLee Wallis,
Anna Schneider, and
Valerija Curikova finished with a time of 12 minutes, 52.33 seconds to finish as a runner-up. The time is third fastest time in the DSU women's indoor track & field school record book.
Dakota State continues their action Saturday on the second day of the Mount Marty Invitational & Multi's. The first women's events are scheduled for 12 p.m. with the high jump.
