(6) Trojans shake off slow start, roll past Montana Western for 10th straight win

Dakota State outscored Bulldogs 79-44 after trailing by 13 points to start the game

DILLON, Mont. – No. 6 ranked Dakota State (S.D.) shook off their slow start Friday evening at Straugh Gymnasium in the Frontier Conference women's basketball action with host-team Montana Western.  After falling behind by 13 points to start the game, the Trojans roared with a monstrous 79-44 for the rest of the game to roll to an 81-59 victory.

Dakota State completed the Frontier Conference season series of Montana Western, extending their winning streak to 10 games.  The 10-game winning streak is tied for eighth longest winning streak in school history with the 2019-20 and 1981-82 squads.

DSU raised their overall record to 22-3 and 17-2 record in conference play.  Montana Western fell to 10-13 overall record and 8-11 record in the league.
 

How It Happened

Bria Wasmund opened with Dakota State's 2-0 lead with a layup with nine minutes and six seconds on the clock in the first period.

The Bulldogs held the Trojans scoreless for nearly five minutes, scoring 15 straight points.  Keke Davis completed a 3-point play to give UMW a commanding 15-2 lead with 4:47 left in the first quarter.

DSU answered by closing the first quarter with a 16-4 outburst capped by Brooke Gunderson's layup, trimming Montana Western's lead to 19-18.

Dakota State flipped the momentum in the second period. The Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 26-14 in the quarter to take a 44-33 halftime advantage.  DSU shot 10-of-17 from the field in the final ten minutes of the first half (58.8 percent), including 5-of-9 from the 3-point line.  UMW was held to 5-of-13 from the field (38.5 percent) and committed eight turnovers in the second quarter.

Dakota State's defense tightened in the third, limiting Montana Western to just eight points while pouring in 20 of its own to extend the margin to 64-41 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans limited the Bulldogs to 22.2 percent from the field (4-of-18 field goals).

The Trojans led by as many as 25 points in the final frame (Angelina Chapple's layup with 2:08 remaining for 78-53 lead – assisted by Eliza Oltmanns).
 

Dakota State Leaders

Tabor Teel delivered a dominant all-around performance, finishing with:
  • Season-high 30 points (12-of-16 field goals, 4-of-7 3-point field goals, and 2-of-2 free-throws)
  • 11 rebounds (third straight double-double, 15th double-double of the season)
  • 3 steals
Bria Wasmund added 13 points, six made free throws, four assists and three steals.

Ella Carstensen provided a spark off the bench with 10 points (3-of-6 field goals, 2-of-2 from three-point range) and four rebounds.

Caitlin Dyer chipped in six points and five assists.  Brooke Gunderson added five points and four rebounds.

Dakota State shot 41.4 percent from the field (29-of-70 field goals) and knocked down 13 three-pointers.

Montana Western Leaders

Bailee Sayler paced the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Isabella Lund added 12 points.

Keke Davis contributed 10 rebounds as Montana Western finished with 45 total boards.

The Bulldogs shot 33.8 percent from the field (22-of-65 field goals) and were limited to 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from beyond the arc.
