SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure a 5-4 victory over Waldorf (Iowa) to kick off the second day of the American State Bank Sports Complex dome tournament Saturday, hosted by Dordt (Iowa). The Trojans outhit the Warriors 11-10 and overcame a four-run Warriors' fifth inning explosion to earn the second win of the season.
Dakota State improved to 2-1, the first time since the 2012 season that the Trojans started 2-1 record in the first three games of the season. In addition, in playing in the ASB Complex dome tournament since 2023, it was the first time that DSU had won two games in the 4-game tournament slate in Sioux Center.
Waldorf, a former member of the North Star Athletic Association, fell to 0-4 overall record. Both teams will meet in DSU's scheduled home opener on March 14 at Thue Field.
How It Happened
Dakota State opened the scoring in the second inning when
Ally Morrissey crossed the plate on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. She reached on base after a single with one out. She swiped to second and advanced to third base after a defensive error on Waldorf.
Quincy Hartley extended the advantage in the fourth, blasting a solo home run to center field to make it 2-0.
Waldorf responded in the top of the fifth. RBI singles by Gabby Bierly and a bases-loaded walk by Dionne Lopez tied the game at 2-2 before a Dakota State error allowed two unearned runs to score, giving the Warriors a 4-2 lead.
The Trojans answered immediately in the bottom half of the fifth frame. After singles by
Alexia Hayden and a double from Hartley, Morrissey delivered a two-run single to tie the contest at 4-4.
Lara Dolezal followed with an RBI single to right field to score Morrissey for the eventual game-winning run, putting DSU back on top 5-4.
Dakota State's pitching staff closed the door over the final two innings to preserve the win.
Pitching
Maycee Bricker started in the circle for DSU, allowing seven hits and two runs (both earned) over 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Grace Kitterman (W, 1-0) earned the win, tossing 2 2/3 innings and surrendering three hits and two runs (both unearned) while walking four and striking out one.
Reagan Ridout (L, 0-2) took the loss for Waldorf, giving up 11 hits and five runs (four earned) in six innings with three strikeouts.
