MADISON, S.D. – No. 6 Dakota State (S.D.) used a dominant third quarter defensive effort and balanced scoring with four players scoring in double digits to defeat Dickinson State (N.D.) 85-63 Friday evening at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojan women's basketball squad clinched at least a share of the Frontier Conference regular season title after the victory.
DSU lifted to 23-4 overall and 18-3 in Frontier conference play, while Dickinson State dropped to 7-18 overall and 5-16 in league action. The Trojans earned their 23
rd straight victory in the series meeting, producing their ninth consecutive season series sweep of the Blue Hawks.
Dakota State broke open a competitive game in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Hawks 19-4 after halftime to take full control and cruise to the victory.
First Half Highlights
Dickinson State came out strong offensively, briefly taking a five-point lead midway through the opening quarter behind perimeter shooting from Kaylin Garza (DiSU led 12-7 with five minutes and twenty-six seconds on the clock in the first quarter).
Dakota State responded with strong interior play from
Tabor Teel and transition scoring by
Bria Wasmund, closing the first quarter ahead 28-23.
The second quarter remained tight as Dickinson State trimmed the margin to two late in the half (37-35 Trojans lead with 3:30 remaining, but Dakota State closed with a 9-2 scoring run to carry a 46-39 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter Highlights
The Trojans took complete control coming out of the locker room.
Dakota State's defensive pressure held Dickinson State to just 2-for-14 shooting (14.3 percent) in the third quarter while forcing multiple turnovers that led to fast-break opportunities.
Cierra Watkins scored repeatedly in transition, while
Hamtyn Heinz added key three-pointers as DSU pushed the lead to 65-43 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter Highlights
Dakota State maintained the momentum and extended the lead to as many as 31 points in the final period., leading 85-54 after a layup by Teel with 4:31 remaining.
The Trojans continued to dominate in transition and in the paint while the bench provided solid closing minutes to secure the win.
