SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) nearly erased a late deficit but fell just short as Briar Cliff (Iowa) held on for a 6-4 victory Saturday afternoon in non-conference softball action at American State Bank Sports Complex, hosted by Dordt (Iowa).
Dakota State is 2-6 overall record. Briar Cliff improved to 6-6 overall record.
Briar Cliff struck early in the top of the first inning, using a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring fielder's choice to build a 2-0 lead. Dakota State answered in the bottom half when
Emmalynn Rabe drove in
Hannah McFarland with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Chargers extended their advantage in the second inning. A solo home run by Aubrey White, combined with two unearned runs, pushed Briar Cliff ahead 5-1. Dakota State pitcher
Maycee Bricker settled in after that frame, keeping the Trojans within striking distance by allowing just one run the rest of the way.
Dakota State threatened multiple times through the middle innings, collecting hits in five straight innings, but Briar Cliff starter White worked out of jams to preserve the lead. The Chargers added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by Kaela Persico to make it 6-1.
The Trojans mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Ally Morrissey singled to start the inning, followed by a double from McFarland.
Quinn Hartley drove in a run with a single to center, and
Alexia Hayden followed with a two-run double to pull Dakota State within 6-4. Briar Cliff brought in reliever Shelby Blankenship, who recorded the final two outs to secure the win.
Dakota State out-hit Briar Cliff 10-8 but left 10 runners on base in the contest.
