MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) dropped an 11-1 decision to NAIA's No. 1 ranked and national defending baseball champion LSU Shreveport Saturday on Feb. 7 at Sterlington Sports Complex, as the Pilots used a seven-run fourth inning to break the game open.
The Trojans closed their Cajun Collision tournament with a 2-2 record. LSU-Shreveport lifted their overall record to 8-1.
How it happened
LSU Shreveport struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth to take full control. Dakota State was limited to one run on seven hits in the contest.
The Pilots manufactured two runs in the first inning. After an RBI groundout by Bronson Neave made it 1-0, LSU Shreveport added an unearned run later in the frame for a 2-0 advantage.
Dakota State had early opportunities, collecting two hits in the first inning, but could not push a run across. The Trojans were scoreless through four innings before breaking through in the fifth.
The decisive fourth inning saw LSU Shreveport tally six hits and seven runs. RBI singles by Carlos Vega and Quaterrion Walton started the rally, followed by a two-run double from Landon Hunt. Spencer Sullivan added an RBI single and later stole second as Hunt stole home. Makana Olaso capped the inning with an RBI double to center, extending the lead to 9-0.
Dakota State responded in the top of the fifth.

Brayden Byrum to trim the deficit to 9-1.
LSU Shreveport added two more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Aiden McGinnis and a sacrifice fly from Vega, pushing the final margin to 11-1.
