SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was held hitless Sunday evening as Mayville State (N.D.) won the pitcher's duel, fueling to a 2-0 victory in Frontier Conference baseball action at Sanford Sports Complex. The Comets handed the Trojans their first league loss of the season in the Frontier Conference Jamboree's finale.
MSU scored the game's only runs in the third inning and made them stand behind a complete-game gem from starting pitcher Sebastian Mizener.
Dakota State fell to 10-15 overall record and 3-1 record in Frontier Conference. Mayville State improved to 15-9 overall record and 2-2 record in the league.
How it happened
The contest quickly turned into a pitcher's duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first two innings. Dakota State starter
Ryland Carroll matched Mayville State early, retiring the first six batters he faced.
The Comets broke through in the bottom of the third inning. Tony Villarreal started the rally with a single, followed by another base hit from Robert Gurney. After a stolen base put both runners in scoring position, Cam Goff delivered a two-run single up the middle to give Mayville State a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans' only baserunner came in the fourth inning when
Aidan Perry reached on an error, but a double play quickly erased the opportunity.
