VCSU edges DSU in Frontier Conference softball doubleheader

Vikings shut down Trojans 4-0 in first game, rallied back to defeat DSU 5-4 in game two

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) edged Dakota State (S.D.) in a pair of games Saturday afternoon in the Frontier Conference softball action at VCSU Softball Complex.  The Vikings shut down the Trojans 4-0 in the four-game series opener and rallied back for a 5-4 victory in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Dakota State is 7-17 overall record and 1-5 record in the Frontier Conference.  Valley City State is 14-13 overall record and 4-2 record in the league.
 

Game 1: Valley City State 4, Dakota State 0 – FINAL

Dakota State was held to just two hits as Valley City State used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to claim the opener, 4-0.

The Vikings broke through in the second inning when Kylee Banerd hit a solo home run and later added another run on a sacrifice fly. Valley City State extended its lead in the fifth inning, capitalizing on Dakota State errors to plate two unearned runs.

Dakota State threatened early and in the middle innings with runners on base but could not produce a key hit, stranding five runners.

Valley City State pitcher Maddy Hazelton dominated in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout and allowing just two hits.

Game 2: Valley City State 5, Dakota State 4 - FINAL

Dakota State jumped out early but couldn't hold the lead as Valley City State rallied for a 5-4 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

The Trojans struck first in the opening inning when Emmalynn Rabe blasted a two-run home run. DSU extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a solo homer by Alexis Resseguie.

Valley City State responded with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game, highlighted by a two-run double from Reagan Mieras. The Vikings then took the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by Madden Bogenreif, making it 5-3.

Dakota State battled back in the seventh, scoring one run on an RBI single by Alexia Hayden, but the rally fell short.
