GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Dakota State (S.D.) made history on the first day of the 46
th annual NAIA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships. The three-day national indoor track & field meet is being held at Alachua County Sports & Events Center at Celebration Pointe for the second straight year.
Amelie Steins competed in the pentathlon for the Trojans. She kicked off the day by collecting 963 points after setting a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.75 seconds. She broke her previous school record time of 8.80 seconds at the South Dakota State Holiday Open last December.
Steins tied her personal record height of 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1.25 inches) to tally 689 points in the high jump for DSU. She followed up with a shot-put toss of 9.70 meters (31 feet, 10 inches) for 510 points.
She leaped to a career best and school record 5.64 meters (18 feet, 6 inches) in the long jump, collecting 741 points. She closed the pentathlon with a time of 2 minutes, 39.85 seconds for 575 points.
Steins established a new career and school record of 3,478 points to place seventh overall. As a result, she became the first DSU pentathlon athlete to earn an NAIA All-America status in school history.
Dakota State scored two points to their team standings, tying for 15
th place with College of Saint Mary (Neb.).
Three Trojan athletes will be in action Friday at 12 p.m. (Eastern Time)/11 a.m. (Central Time), including Steins in the long jump.
Oliviyah Thornton and
Bella Maxwell will be competing in the weight throw at the same time.
