YANKTON, S.D. — Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to overcome Mount Marty's (S.D.) second-half offensive surge Wednesday evening, falling 5-1 in a non-conference women's soccer contest at Crane-Youngworth Field.
The Trojans dropped to 0-2 overall, while the Lancers began their season at 1-0 overall after the victory.
Mount Marty outshot Dakota State 20-3 in the contest, including a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal.
How it happened
The Lancers produced the first scoring opportunity of the match and maintained most of the offensive pressure in the opening half. DSU goalkeeper
Ivey Winckler stopped four shots during the first 35 minutes, including saves on attempts by Angelina Hopwood, Rhyli Grim, Baylee Beck and Addison Altwies.
MMU broke the scoreless tie in the 39
th minute. Alexia Valdez scored at the 38:19 mark off an assist from Baylee Beck, giving Mount Marty a 1-0 advantage. The hosts carried the one-goal lead into halftime after holding a 9-0 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes. Dakota State recorded one corner kick in the first half.
Mount Marty extended its lead less than three minutes into the second half. Julianne Donnelly found the net at the 47:41 mark with Kendra McKinney collecting the assist for a 2-0 Lancer advantage.
Dakota State registered its first shot on goal in the 56
th minute when
Katie Brown's attempt was stopped by Mount Marty goalkeeper Miranda Hood.
The Lancers added two goals in a span of 82 seconds midway through the second half. Grim scored at the 60:50 mark on an assist from Liz Stordahl, followed by Stordahl's goal at 62:12 off Donnelly's assist to extend Mount Marty's lead to 4-0.

st minute, taking an assist from Avery Hoskins for the Lancers' fifth goal.
The Trojans continued to battle and broke through late in the match.
Onika Kline placed a header on goal in the 87
th minute that Hood saved. Less than two minutes later,
Aislyn Holden scored her first goal of the season at the 87:46 mark.
Ella Pletcher was credited with the assist, cutting Mount Marty's final margin to 5-1.
Inside the box score
Holden, Brown and Kline each registered one shot for Dakota State, with all three attempts on goal. Holden finished with the Trojans' lone goal, while Pletcher recorded the assist.
Winckler was credited with eight saves for Dakota State. The Trojan defense also registered a team defensive save. Mount Marty's Hood finished with two saves.
Mount Marty held a 20-3 advantage in total shots and a 14-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lancers also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Dakota State committed four fouls compared to two by Mount Marty. The Lancers were whistled for seven offsides, while the Trojans were called offside once.
