MADISON, S.D. — Dakota State (S.D.) erased an early deficit Tuesday evening, using
Aislyn Holden's second-half equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw with Dordt (Iowa) in a non-conference women's soccer match at Dan Beacom Track and Field.
The Trojans moved to 0-6-1 overall, while the Defenders moved to 1-2-2. Dordt held a 12-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, but Dakota State's goalkeeping tandem combined for eight saves.
How it happened
Dordt struck early to take a 1-0 lead. Lameese Batarseh scored her first goal of the season just 3 minutes, 43 seconds into the match.
Dakota State generated the first shot of the contest when
Madison Smalley put an attempt on goal 51 seconds into the match, forcing Dordt goalkeeper Lizzie Graham to make the save.
The Defenders applied pressure throughout the remainder of the first half. Joslyn Vander Molen, Maria Zylstra and Abi Keltner each put shots on goal, but Dakota State goalkeeper
Ivey Winckler stopped all four shots she faced after Dordt's opening goal.
The Trojans also generated a pair of corner kicks in the opening half, coming from
Nichole Corona in the 27th minute and
Hannah Hint in the 28th minute. Dordt maintained its 1-0 advantage at halftime after outshooting Dakota State 7-1 in the opening 45 minutes.
Dakota State became more aggressive offensively after halftime, producing five of its six shots during the second period.
The Trojans earned a corner kick from Hint just over three minutes into the second half. Dordt continued to test Winckler, who stopped attempts by Vander Molen and Faith Mondeel during the opening 11 minutes of the period.
Dakota State finally broke through in the 73rd minute. After Corona sent a shot high at the 72:10 mark, Holden found the back of the net just 48 seconds later to tie the match at 1-1. It was Holden's second goal of the season.
The Trojans continued to create opportunities following the equalizer.
Onika Kline put a shot on goal in the 80th minute, which Graham saved.
Lea Jensen had a shot blocked in the 84th minute, while Corona had another attempt sail high in the 89th minute.
Dordt also created late scoring chances. Keltner put a shot on goal in the 76th minute before Abby Foster tested Dakota State reserve goalkeeper
Sierra Verplancke in the 86th minute. Verplancke made the save to preserve the tie.
Neither team found the go-ahead goal before the final whistle as Dakota State secured the 1-1 draw.
Inside the box score
Dordt finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and placed nine attempts on goal compared with three by Dakota State. The Defenders also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Dakota State committed seven fouls compared with two by Dordt. The Defenders were whistled for five offsides, while the Trojans were not called offside.
Corona led Dakota State with two shots. Holden scored on her only attempt, while Kline and Smalley each registered one shot on goal. Jensen added one shot.
Winckler played the first 83:04 in goal for the Trojans, allowing one goal and recording seven saves. Verplancke played the final 6:56 and stopped the only shot she faced.
Graham played all 90 minutes in goal for Dordt, allowing Holden's goal and recording two saves.
Dordt's Keltner and Zylstra each recorded three shots, with two on goal apiece. Vander Molen added two shots on goal. Batarseh scored on her only shot of the match.
