Trojans hold off Comets in four-set Frontier victory at DSU Fieldhouse

Dakota State completes weekend sweep of North Dakota teams

MADISON, S.D. — Dakota State (S.D.) completed their weekend sweep of North Dakota teams, holding off Mayville State (N.D.) in four sets in Frontier Conference women's volleyball action at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans defeated the Comets 25-16, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-15

DSU lifted their overall record to 9-6 and 6-3 in Frontier play.  Mayville State remained winless in 14 matches and nine Frontier Conference matches.

The Trojans won their eighth straight meeting with the Comets.

How it happened

The opening set featured nine ties and five lead changes before Dakota State broke away. The Trojans trailed 11-10 before putting together a decisive run.

DSU scored 12 of the next 16 points to build a 22-14 advantage.  Tristyn Maras, Lauryn Kloth, Kaedyn Sapp, Raya Van Beek and Macey Wathen also contributed kills during DSU's scoring run.

Emily Nelson later put the Trojans at set point with a kill before Maras closed the opening frame with another kill for a 25-16 victory. Dakota State collected 17 kills and hit .308 in the first set, while holding Mayville State to eight kills and a .000 hitting percentage.

The Comets responded in the second set, jumping to a 7-3 advantage. Dakota State gradually worked its way back and later trimmed the deficit to 13-10.

Mayville State answered with three straight points for a 16-10 lead and maintained its advantage throughout the remainder of the set. DSU pulled within three points at 22-19, but the Comets scored three of the final four points to even the match at one set apiece after a 25-20 victory.

Mayville State produced its best offensive set of the afternoon, collecting 13 kills with just three errors in 30 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage. Dakota State finished with 15 kills and hit .163.

Dakota State regained control in the third set. Leading 5-3, the Trojans rattled off seven consecutive points to build a 12-3 advantage.

The Comets attempted to cut into the deficit, but DSU maintained a comfortable cushion. The Trojans extended their lead to double digits at 18-8.

DSU reached set point at 24-15. Mayville State fought off two set points before Gabi Borresen finished the set with a kill for a 25-17 Trojan victory and a 2-1 match lead.

Dakota State held Mayville State to nine kills and a .071 hitting percentage in the third set.

The Trojans carried their momentum into the fourth set. After the teams exchanged points early, Dakota State used a 5-0 run to build an 11-4 advantage.

DSU later stretched its lead to 18-10. Mayville State responded with five consecutive points, trimming the Trojans' advantage to 18-15.

Dakota State shut the door from there, scoring the final seven points of the match. Kaylee Evenson delivered the match-clinching kill (closing the match with three straight kills) as the Trojans completed the 25-15 victory.

DSU saved its best offensive performance for the final set, hammering 17 kills with just four errors in 34 attacks for a .382 hitting percentage. Mayville State hit .057 with six kills and four errors.

Inside the box score

Nelson led a balanced Dakota State attack with a season-high 12 kills. She added 16 assists, 12 digs, two block assists and a service ace for an all-around performance.  It was the first triple-double for Nelson at DSU, with the last time being held by Maddi Langerock with 11 kills, 40 set assists, and 16 digs at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Oct. 19, 2025.

Maras followed with 11 kills and hit .259, while M. Wathen collected nine kills with just one error in 18 swings for a team-best .444 hitting percentage.

Evenson provided nine kills and hit .412 in three sets. Kloth added eight kills and four block assists, while Sapp finished with seven kills. Van Beek contributed five kills and hit .333.

Borresen directed the Trojan offense with 26 assists and added 15 digs.  She posted a double-double. Kate VanRooyan paced the back row with a match-high 19 digs and two service aces. Sydney Wathen collected nine and Reagan VanRooyan finished with eight digs.

Andrea Majchrzak led Mayville State with 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. She also recorded two solo blocks and two block assists. Lexi Hoeft added eight kills and four block assists, while Haley Johnson finished with six kills and hit .250.

Danica Hanson led the Comets with 16 assists and 12 digs, while Zenna Krull contributed 13 assists and seven digs. Tori Richter recorded 11 digs, three assists and a service ace, while Ada Pearson added 10 digs and an ace.

Kathryn Agnew highlighted Mayville State's blocking effort with nine block assists. The Comets totaled 13 team blocks in the match.

Dakota State finished with a 63-36 advantage in kills and a 75-59 edge in digs. DSU hit .242 (63 kills, 24 errors, 161 attempts), while Mayville State hit .103 (36 kills, 21 errors, 145 attempts). The Trojans recorded 53 assists to the Comets' 35.

Mayville State held a 13-6 advantage in total blocks. Both teams finished with four service aces, with Dakota State committing nine service errors compared with five by the Comets.

Up next

Dakota State prepares for their four-match Frontier Conference road trip.  The Trojans close their first half of the league schedule next weekend, starting on Friday at MSU-Northern.  The match is set for 8 p.m. (Central Time)/7 p.m. (Mountain Time) in Havre, Mont.
