1983-84 DSC Women’s Basketball SDIC Championship Team

Every season tells a story. The story of the 1983-84 women’s basketball team was a commitment to success. This group of athletes compiled a 20-3 overall record, a 13-1 SDIC Championship record, advanced to the District 12 Playoffs in Jamestown, N.D. and won the fifth consecutive SDIC Conference Championship.
The 1983-84 season began with a tournament at Wahpeton in which we won the tournament with 12- and 37-point wins. Wins continued against Mount Marty and a 33-point victory against Bismarck in the Valley City Tournament. It was at this same tournament the Lady T’s lost their first game to the host-team after four consecutive wins.
The team began another five-game win streak including conference wins against Yankton College, USD/S and Huron College. The second loss came on January 21st, when we traveled to Dakota Wesleyan. At this point, the Lady T’s were 3-0 in the conference but also had a 35-game SDIC win streak on the line. The record-setting streak spanned the prior two years when they completed two consecutive 14-0 seasons. The Wesleyan game was close throughout as were many games with rival DWU, but we ended up dropping a hard fought two-point decision, 67-69.
However, we bounced back with wins over USF, BHSU and another big rival, SD Tech. The game with Tech was a pivotal game as they were solid contenders for the conference title and were playing on the road. The game was another nail-biter, but the Lady T’s won 57-55.
SDIC conference wins continued as the second round of conference games began with wins over Yankton College, USD/S, and a rematch with DWU. In front of a fired-up Fieldhouse crowd, the Lady T’s avenged the January loss by trouncing the Tigers 81-54. Wins against Huron, USF, BHSU, and Tech finished out the season. While the first game against Tech was a real defensive battle, the game at the Fieldhouse was a shootout with the Lady T’s winning 92-86.
The regular-season ended at 20-2 with one loss coming in early December and the second loss three weeks into January after a five-game win streak. As the conference champion, we were the SDIC representative into the District 12 playoffs. We traveled to Jamestown, N.D., and played in the Civic Center. The game was close throughout, but Jamestown won and ended an 11-game win streak and the Lady T’s season.
This group of athletes was very team-oriented as they still hold records in every DSU team category. Those records include:
- 4th place for most wins in a season (20);
- tied for 1st with most consecutive wins (11);
- 8th place for most points in a single game (100 vs. Black Hills State University);
- 2nd place in most points in a single season (2,288);
- 1st place in most points per game (81.7), ad this was prior to the 3-point shot;
- the best single-season winning percentage at 87%
- every Lady T on this team who played four years won four conference championships
Four players were named to the 10-member SDIC All-Conference teams with junior Monica Matthies and sophomore Julie Fiegen being named to the first team and senior Carol Freeman and sophomore Janelle Schaefer were selected to the second team. Monica was also chosen NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, SDIC most valuable player, and NAIA Academic All-American. Individual records include Julie Heinz who is 6th in single-season assists with 122 and Julie Fiegen 2nd, tied for 3rd and tied for 7th in single-game rebounds with 21, 19, 19, and 18, respectively.
It really was a remarkable and memorable year for a great group of players, managers and coaches.
