2016 Dakota State University Athletics Annual Awards
Seth Boomsma (2016) - Track & Field (Co-Outstanding Male Athlete)
Seth Boomsma and Ben Kullos were chosen as the DSU Most Outstanding Co-Male Athlete-of-the-Year award.
Boomsma continued to build on his impressive running career at Dakota State when he added his third overall NAIA Indoor Track All-American this past March. He qualified for the NAIA Indoor track Nationals in the men's 60-meter dash, where he clocked a time of 6.81 seconds for the eighth-best time in the semifinals which advanced him to the finals.
Boomsma finished seventh in the finals with a time of 6.83 seconds, bringing his total of NAIA All-American honors to five in his career at DSU.
Boomsma also qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track Nationals last May and has already secured a spot in this year's national meet in the 100-meters and 200-meters. He was also named All-Conference at the North Star Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field meet after winning the 60-meters and 200-meters in Brookings last February
Boomsma earned NSAA Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week honors twice during the 2016 indoor track season for the Trojans.
Seth is the son of Terry and Stacey Boomsma of Crooks, S.D. He is a senior Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Ben Kullos (2016) - Football (Co-Outstanding Male Athlete)
Ben Kullos had a monstrous season for the Trojan Football team where he broke numerous school records. He was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA)-NAIA Football All-American First Team at linebacker position after breaking numerous tackle records.
He holds the DSU Football school record for most career tackles with 441, single-season tackle record with 181, and single-game record of 25 tackles versus Waldorf (Iowa) on Sept. 12.
Kullos was also selected as the North Star Athletic Association Defensive Player-of-the-Year after leading the nation in total tackles. He registered six (6) quarterback sacks, two (2) interceptions and four (4) forced fumbles in 2015.
He is also a two-time NSAA All-Conference First Team recipient and was honored as the conference's defensive player-of-the-week three times during the season.
Kullos was named the NAIA Football National Defensive Player-of-the-Week on Oct. 19. He was one of the 22 NAIA Football players being selected to the Cliff Harris Small College Defensive Player-of-the-Year list.
Kullos earned the College of Sports Information Directors of American Academic All-American College Division, Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete award and NSAA Fall Sports Scholar Athlete for his academic achievements in the classroom.
Ben is the son of Berney and Nancy Kullos of Peoria, Ariz. He is a senior Secondary Math Education at DSU.
Carly Rozell (2016) - Volleyball (Outstanding Female Athlete)
Carly Rozell was selected as the Most Outstanding Female Athlete-of-the-Year award.
Rozell, a sophomore outside hitter for the Dakota State Volleyball team, was named to the 2015 North Star Athletic Association Volleyball First Team All-Conference squad. She led the Trojans' offensive attack with 388 kills and 32 service aces in 2015.
She averaged 3.0 kills per set – third overall in the NSAA conference in kills per set – and recorded double-digit kills in 20 matches.
Rozell produced double-doubles ten (10) times this season for the Trojans. She also tallied 61 blocks for the Trojans.
Rozell racked up a total of 799 career kills, 530 digs and 134 blocks in her two seasons at Dakota State University. She was also named to the NSAA Fall Sports Scholar-Athlete list for her academic success in the classroom.
Carly is the daughter of Paul and Brenda Rozell of Aberdeen, S.D. She is a sophomore Elementary Education major at Dakota State University.
Kyle Kilgore (2016) - Men's Basketball (Dusty Andersen Award)
Kyle Kilgore was this year recipient for the Dusty Andersen award for his outstanding accomplishments in men's basketball.
Kilgore, a junior forward, was honored as an NAIA Division II Men's basketball All-American Second Team last March. He led the Trojans with 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in 2015-16. He also led the team with 26 blocked shots and shot 58 percent from the field.
During 14 North Star Athletic Association conference games, Kilgore averaged 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He led the conference in field goal percentage and rebounding categories. He tallied 13 double-doubles during the season, which was the most double-doubles in the NSAA conference.
As a result, the league coaches voted Kilgore as its Most Valuable Player, Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection.
He helped the Trojans establish their longest winning streak in DSU history with nine (9) consecutive victories, fueling DSU to their back-to-back NSAA conference regular-season and postseason titles. The Trojans also qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.
