2017 Dakota State University Athletics Annual Awards
Mark Moeller (2017) - Cross Country, Track & Field (Outstanding Male Athlete)
Mark Moeller was selected as the DSU Most Outstanding Male Athlete-of-the-Year award.
Moeller, a senior cross country and track's middle distance runner at Dakota State, earned his third overall NAIA All-American honor after placing fifth in the men's 800-meter run finals at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Nationals on March 4, 2017. He was also a member of the men's 4 x 800-meter relay team that posted its season-best time of 7 minutes, 50.26 seconds to place 10th overall at the 2017 NAIA Indoor Track & Field (11-places improvement after being seeded No. 21 before the national meet).
Moeller was the individual champion in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 57.37 seconds at the 2017 North Star Indoor Track & Field conference meet for the Trojans. He was selected to the NSAA Indoor Track Athlete-of-the-Week honor last winter.
Moeller was also named to NAIA Indoor Track All-American in the men's 800-meters in 2015 and a member of the NAIA Outdoor Track All-American in the 4 x 100-meter relay in 2013. He was part of 4 x 100-meter relay team that currently holds the DSU Men's Outdoor Track school record time of 40.68 seconds with D'Artist Williams, Stacey Berg and Seth Boomsma, which was set in 2013.
Mark is the son of Jon and Ginger Moeller of Rosholt, S.D. He is a Physical Education major at Dakota State University.
Karen Mayfield (2017) - Cross Country, Track & Field (Co-Outstanding Female Athlete)
Karen Mayfield, a cross country and track's long-distance runner at DSU, was selected as the DSU Co-Most Outstanding Female Athlete-of-the-Year award.
Mayfield is a two-time North Star Athletic Association Women's Cross Country All-Conference runner, just few places short of qualifying for the NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships in both her junior and senior seasons.
She also earned North Star All-Conference in Women's Outdoor Track & Field in two different events, the 5000-meters and 10,000-meters in last spring's conference meet. Mayfield earned the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track & Field All-American honor after placing third in the full marathon race at the 2016 national meet, where she owns the DSU school record time in full marathon of 3 hours, 16 minutes and 47.20 seconds.
She also owns the Trojan school record in half-marathon with a time of 1 hour, 29 minutes and 23 seconds in 2015. Mayfield already secured a spot at the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships this spring after producing the second-best mark in the school's half-marathon record time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and 31 seconds last December 2016.
Karen is the daughter of Gary and Terri Mayfield of Watertown, S.D. She is a senior Business Administration major at Dakota State.
BreeAna Olson (2017) - Women's Basketball (Co-Outstanding Female Athlete)
BreeAna Olson was also named to DSU Co-Most Outstanding Female Athlete, where she competed in women's basketball and track as a sprinter.
Olson completed her impressive four-year career with the Lady T's Basketball team. She was a two-time North Star Women's Basketball All-Conference Second Team selection. She is third in the Lady T's all-time scoring list with 1,442 career points. She recorded her 1,000th career point during DSU's season home opener at DSU Fieldhouse last October.
Olson scored a season-high of 449 points in 30 games, led the Lady T's with 15.0 points and 2.6 steals per game this past winter. She also averaged 4.3 rebounds per game and scored in double-digits 21 times in 2016-17. Olson is second in the DSU Lady T's Basketball record book for most career steals with 287, third in career free-throws made with 293 and fourth most career field goals made with 531 career field goals.
Olson is also the North Star All-Conference runner in the Outdoor Track & Field in the women's 200-meter run last spring.
BreeAna is the daughter of DaNeil Olson and the late Reggie Olson of Nunda, S.D. She is a senior Physical Education major at Dakota State University.
Tanner Heiser (2017) - Men's Basketball (Dusty Andersen Award)
Tanner Heiser was this year recipient for the Dusty Andersen award for his outstanding accomplishments in men's basketball.
Heiser, a senior guard, is a two-time North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball All-Conference Second Team recipient. He was named to the NSAA Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week twice this past winter season.
He broke the DSU school record for most 3-pointers made in a single game with 11 3-pointers at Waldorf (Iowa). He poured in a career-high of 35 points twice during the season versus Northwestern (Iowa) in the Trojans' basketball season home opener last October as well as at Waldorf (Iowa) last February.
Heiser is fifth in the DSU Men's Basketball record book for career assists with 285. He is also fifth in career steals with 104. He is third in 3-point field goals made in a single season with 89 3-pointers, fifth in career 3-point field goals made with 152 3-pointers and sixth in career 3-point field goal percentage of 39 percent.
Heiser was one of the integral members of the 2015-16 Dakota State Trojan Men's Basketball Team that won the North Star conference regular-season and tournament titles, and qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament.
Heiser was honored as Daktronics-NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete and North Star Scholar-Athlete awards for his academic success in the classroom.
Tanner is the son of Ron and Pam Heiser of Watertown, S.D. He is studying in Professional Accountancy at Dakota State University.
