2018 Dakota State University Athletics Annual Awards
Jacob Giles (2018) - Football (Co-Outstanding Male Athlete)
Jacob Giles completed his stellar football career at Dakota State as one of the top quarterbacks in school history. He was chosen as the 2017 North Star Athletic Association Football Offensive Player-of-the-Year. He had a monstrous season for the Trojans where he set numerous passing records.
He finished the 2017 season with 243 passes in 384 attempts for a total of 3,133 yards with 39 passing touchdowns for the Trojans. His completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns all set the Trojan Football single-season records. Giles also set the single-season record for most total offense yards with 3,311 yards.
He has been named to the NSAA Football All-Conference First Team for two consecutive years. He was also named to the NSAA Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week five times during the 2017 season, accumulating a total of nine conference player-of-the-week honors during his career at DSU.
He was chosen to the NAIA Football Offensive National Player-of-the-Week once during his junior season.
Giles completed his four-year career at Dakota State with all-time school records of 664 completions, 8,736 passing yards and 91 touchdowns.
He was also recognized for his academic success in the classroom, where he was a two-time Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and NSAA Scholar-Athlete all four seasons. He was one of the 181 semifinalists for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, recognizing an individual as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation. He was also a nominee for the 2017 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team award.
Jacob is the son of Chris and Karen Giles of Madison. He is a senior English Education major at Dakota State University.
Austin Opdahl (2018) - Football (Co-Outstanding Male Athlete)
Austin Opdahl had another monstrous season for Dakota State in 2017, breaking a new single-?season record of 1,121 receiving yards. He owns the DSU single-game record of 333 receiving yards in Trojans' victory over long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
Opdahl caught 14 touchdown passes in 2017, extending his school record with 42 career touchdown receptions at DSU. It was the third straight year that he was named to the North Star Athletic Association Football All-Conference team, with the last two years as a First-Team selection.
He was named to the 2016 AFCA-NAIA Football All-American Second Team, as well as being named to the NSAA Football Offensive Most Valuable Player. He was selected to the NSAA Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week two times during his career at Dakota State.
He finished his career with 204 catches for a total of 3,202 receiving yards for the Trojans.
In track & field, Opdahl has captured six high jump North Star Athletic Association titles with three titles during the indoor season and three titles during the outdoor season. He was also a member of the Trojan men's 4 x 100-meter relay that earned NSAA Outdoor Track All-Conference in 2017.
Austin is the son of Nick Opdahl and Jen Tieszen of Madison. He is a senior Professional Accountancy major at DSU.
Carly Rozell (2018) - Football (Outstanding Female Athlete)
Carly Rozell, a four-year starter for DSU Trojan Volleyball team, was chosen as the DSU Most Outstanding Female Athlete-of-the-Year award. It was her second time that she received the most outstanding athlete award (2016).
Rozell became the all-time Dakota State kills leader with 1,481 kills. She completed her impressive four-year career as the first four-time North Star Athletic Association Volleyball All-Conference recipient. She was named to the All-Conference Second Team this past fall after leading the team with 375 kills, 339 digs and 52 service aces.
During her stellar four-year career at DSU, Rozell was named to the Second Team All-Conference honor three times, First Team All-Conference selection and was named Freshman-of-the-Year with the Trojan Volleyball team in 2014.
She received the prestigious academic honor—the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete—for the second consecutive year. She was also named to the NSAA Scholar-Athlete all four seasons at Dakota State.
Rozell was recognized as the North Star Champions of Character recipient for the Trojan Volleyball team this past fall.
Carly is the daughter of Paul and Brenda Rozell of Aberdeen, S.D. She is a senior Elementary Education major at Dakota State University.
Brendon Boomsma (2018) - Men's Basketball (Dusty Andersen Award)
Brendon Boomsma was this year's recipient for the Dusty Andersen award for his outstanding accomplishment in men's basketball.
Boomsma, a senior guard, was a four-year letter winner for the Dakota State Trojan men's basketball team. He was an integral member of the Trojans that won back-to-back North Star Athletic Association regular-season and conference tournament titles, including a pair of trips to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in 2015 and 2016.
Boomsma was also named as a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and a NSAA Scholar-Athlete for his academic success in the classroom.
The Trojan men's basketball coaching staff selected Boomsma as the North Star's Champions of Character representative this past winter.
He has played in a total of 122 games during his impressive four-year career at Dakota State, accumulating a total of 846 points. He is third all-time in the Trojan men's basketball school record book with 175 3-point field goals made. He also holds the sixth all-time assists with a total of 272 assists.
Brendon is the son of Terry and Stacey Boomsma of Crooks, S.D. He majors in Exercise Science at Dakota State University.
