Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers

Anvil Sinsabaugh is entering his sixth season with the Dakota State University Trojan football coaching staff.  He is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach after coaching the offensive line in 2019.

He helped the Trojans to one of the top defensive teams in the North Star Athletic Association, allowing its opponents to 17.0 points per game in 2020 and 20.3 points per game in 2021.  Dakota State recorded back-to-back winning seasons in 2022 with a 6-4 record, closing out with a 13-0 shutout home victory over Waldorf (Iowa) in the final game ever held at the Trojan Field.  He coached Cody Brown who was named to NAIA Football All-America Honorable Mention. 

DSU led the North Star conference in total yards allowed with 259.4 yards per game in 2020, and second in 2021 with 297.8 yards allowed per game.

The Trojans finished its 2021 season with their first winning season since 2017, including a perfect 4-0 record at Trojan Field in North Star contests for the first time since the conference inception in 2013-14.

Defensive back Noah Guse was named to NAIA All-America First Team in 2021 and Honorable Mention in 2020.  The Trojans were tied for fourth nationally in total interceptions with 21 in 2021, sparked by Guse’s career record of 19 interceptions and single season record of eight interceptions (breaking nearly 20 years old school records).  He tied the NAIA in most interceptions with three other players with eight interceptions.

Prior coming to Dakota State, Sinsabaugh was the wide receivers’ coach at the University of Montana Western.  He also had coaching stops at Montana State-Northern, where he was the offensive line coach and served as the recruiting coordinator from 2016-18.

He started his coaching career at Morningside (Iowa) and was part of the national runner-up team in 2012.  He was the team captain in his junior and senior seasons for the Mustangs.

Sinsabaugh graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Morningside in 2014.  He later earned his master’s degree in education from Montana State-Northern in 2018.

Anvil and his wife Marissa currently reside in Madison with their son Roper.
