Michael Collins comes to Dakota State from fellow NAIA and North Star Athletic Association conference member Jamestown College. He spent one season there as the defensive back coach. Under his tutelage, three players gained All-Conference honors and one was named co-defensive conference player of the year.
Prior to coaching at Jamestown College, Collins was at William Penn (Iowa) for four seasons. He served as the wide receiver coach for three seasons and defensive back coach for one season. During that time, the program saw a cumulative record of 33-12 with a Mid-States Football Association conference championship and a ranking as high as No. 4 in the NAIA.
While earning his Masters in May of 2010 in Business Leadership at William Penn, Collins assisted on teams that broke numerous school records as well as national records. The 2010 season saw the NAIA national rushing records of 4,476 yards and 6.9 yards per carry. Also during that time, Collins mentored three All-Conference wide receiver selections as well as four All-Conference defensive back selections.
Collins coached at Iowa Wesleyan in 2007 where he served as quarterback coach and assisted in implementing a new offensive scheme. He also coordinated the special teams.
He earned his bachelor's degree in Business with a minor in coaching at Central Michigan University in May of 2007. He was a student assistant coach for the NCAA Division I-A program in 2006. Collins helped with the quarterbacks for the team that finished 10-4, won the Mid-American Conference championship and beat Middle Tennessee State in the Motor City Bowl for the first-ever bowl victory in school history.
