Alex Glover is entering his 12th year with the Trojan Track and Field coaching staff as the throws and multi-events coach.
During Glover's time as the throws & multis coach, his athletes have garnered one (1) national champion, three (3) national runners-up, 14 NAIA All-America awards, twelve (12) NAIA National Meet qualifiers in 52 total events, four (4) North Star Athletic Association Meet Most Valuable Athletes, and seven (7) North Star Athletic Association Field-Athlete-of-the-Year awards. He has coached 37 different All-Conference athletes to 122 All-Conference selections in field events.
Since 2013, the throwers and multi-athletes have also broken eleven (11) school records (men's weight throw, men's heptathlon, men's discus, men's hammer throw, men's decathlon, women's indoor shot put, women's weight throw, women's hammer throw, women's discus, women’s outdoor shot put, and the women's heptathlon) and added 128 marks in the Dakota State "Top 10" list.
DSU extended their men’s outdoor track & field program history of five consecutive North Star -Athletic Association titles in 2024. He also coached their first ever NAIA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field hammer throw All-America (Oliviyah Thornton) during the 2024 national meet.
In addition, Glover coached Treshawn Roberts to six national appearances during the outdoor and indoor seasons. Roberts earned the runner-up in the indoor men’s heptathlon during the 2023 and 2024 national meets in Brookings, his third consecutive NAIA Indoor Track & Field All-America honor. Roberts was also named the NSAA Men’s Indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Meet, as well as the conference’s Men’s Indoor Track & Field Most Valuable Athlete in 2023. Roberts was also named to the 2024 NSAA Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Meet held at the new Dan Beacom Track Complex.
Dakota State earned their fifth NSAA men’s indoor track & field team title in the past five seasons. Chantz Minear also earned NAIA Indoor Track & Field All-America heptathlon, the first time in school history to have two athletes earning All-American in the same event at the same national meet.
Dakota State had a historic breaking season in the 2023 outdoor season, where the first discus national title was crowned. Conner Tordsen became the first Trojan men’s outdoor track athlete to capture the men’s individual title, winning the discus title. He added another All-America status in the hammer throw and competed in the shot put at the same national meet. Tordsen was also named to the NSAA Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Meet, as well as the NSAA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Most Valuable Athlete in 2023.
Dakota State erupted for a conference meet record of 300 points, establishing its historic three-peat North Star men’s outdoor track & field conference title. The Trojans also produced five consecutive NSAA discus throw men’s title and four straight NSAA men’s hammer throw title. Conner Tordsen shared the league’s Field Athlete-of-the Meet and was voted the most valuable athlete in the conference. He made his second straight outdoor track & field national appearance, becoming the first DSU hammer thrower to be named All-America after finishing seventh at the national meet. He also competed in the discus throw.
DSU also produced a conference champion in the women’s hammer throw at the 2022 NSAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Trojans continued its dominance in the 2022 NSAA indoor track & field conference meet, sweeping both men’s and women’s weight throw title for the second straight season. The Trojan men’s squad captured its third conference team title in a span of four years while the women’s team established a team conference meet record of 179 points for a second-place finish. Tordsen qualified for the 2022 NAIA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships in the weight throw.
Glover also coached a pair of multi-events athletes in Roberts and Fane Sauvakacolo to the North Star Athletic Association All-Conference honors during the 2021-22 season, both indoor and outdoor. Roberts won the NSAA indoor heptathlon champion twice in 2020 and 2022, as well as the outdoor decathlon champion in 2022. He earned the NAIA All-America distinction in both indoor and outdoor track & field national championships in 2022.
Dakota State had an astounding 2021 North Star Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where the Trojans gained their second straight men’s team title after taking a year off in outdoor track due to COVID. DSU women established a team conference meet record of 200 points after placing second. Traia Hubbard (discus throw), Tyler Moulton (discus throw), and Tordsen (hammer throw) qualified for the 2021 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
DSU dominated the weight throw division at the 2021 North Star Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning both men’s and women’s titles. Hubbard was named to the conference’s Field-Athlete-of-the-Meet (added the conference title in shot put) and became the first two-time NAIA All-America Indoor shot-put thrower in DSU school history.
In 2020, Dakota State throwers won two (2) of the four (4) events at the NSAA Indoor Conference Championship (women's shot put and women's weight throw). Traia Hubbard and Tyler Moulton qualified for the 2020 NAIA Indoor National Championships in shot put. Hubbard finished 5th in the event with a school record throw of 14.01 meters (45 feet, 11.5 inches) and became the first DSU women's indoor All-America shot-put thrower in school history. She was also the first NAIA women's indoor All-American track & field athlete since 2011 (Danielle Rowe – high jump).
In 2019, Glover's throwers won seven (7) of the 12 events at the North Star Athletic Association's Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships. In two (2) events, the Trojan throwers finished in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place (women's hammer throw and men's discus). Hubbard was named the 2019 Women's North Star Athletic Association Indoor Field-Athlete-of-the-Year.
Glover coached the first-ever NAIA Outdoor Men's Track & Field All-America discus athlete in school history (Tyler Lems) at the 2018 national meet, where he finished 7th. Lems repeated as an All-American in 2019 in the discus, finishing 5th at the 2019 NAIA Outdoor National Championships.
During Glover's first six years at Dakota State, he also coached the defensive line for the Trojan Football Team. He has coached two (2) NAIA All-Americans (Curt Boeke in 2017 & 2018, Cole Potter in 2014), one (1) NAIA Defensive Player-of-the-Week (Cole Potter in 2016) and fourteen (14) All-Conference selections on the defensive line.
Boeke tallied 124 tackles for the Trojans in 2018, which once again led all NAIA defensive lineman in overall tackles and was 4th overall across all positions. He also led all defensive players in the North Star conference in total tackles, tackles-for-loss (19) and quarterback sacks (8.5). Boeke was named the North Star Athletic Association's Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He was also the top vote-getter in the NAIA for the Cliff Harris Award, which is the award for the small school defensive player of the year. John Trout was also 3rd in the NAIA for tackles by a defensive lineman with 92 on the season.
Boeke tallied 97 tackles for the Trojans in 2017, which led all NAIA defensive lineman in overall tackles. He also led all defensive players in the North Star conference in total tackles, tackles-for-loss (19) and quarterback sacks (8.5).
Potter led all NAIA defensive linemen in tackles (90), tackles-for-loss (32.5) and quarterback sacks (14.5) for the Trojans in 2014. Potter also broke the school record for sacks in a single season (14.5) and sacks in a single game (4) and finished his career as a 3-time North Star All-Conference defensive lineman. He was second all-time in career sacks with 26.5 at DSU.
Prior coming to Dakota State, Glover was the offensive coordinator and assistant throws coach at his high school alma mater in Elkton, S.D. for three years. He was an All-Conference, All-State and All-Register defensive end for Elkton High School. He was a three-time state track qualifier in discus.
Glover continued his education at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D. where he earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Management. He was a starter at tight end as a freshman, helping DWU to their best record since 1992. He was an integral member of the DWU football team that recorded its first winning campaign in the Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2008 with a 7-3 record and a No. 23 ranking in the final NAIA Football Coaches' poll. DWU was honored as the South Dakota Sportswriter's Association 2008 Men's College Team-of-the-Year.
Glover also competed with DWU's track & field program as he was involved with throws for two seasons.
Alex and his wife Kaitlyn reside in Madison and have four children - Leila, Naomi, Jayda, and Desmond.
