Coach David Moe
David Moe enters his eighth season as Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan women’s basketball head coach. He is the third all-time winning coach in DSU women’s basketball program history with 144 victories.
Moe led the Trojans to their fourth consecutive North Star Athletic Association regular season champion in 2023-24, the first time since the 1980’s decade that DSU had won four straight conference titles (eight straight conference titles in the former South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference from 1980-87). The Trojans shared their conference title with Mayville State (N.D.), each with an 11-1 conference record.
The Trojans amassed an impressive 51-3 record during their four consecutive NSAA conference regular-season title. The league voted Moe as the Coach-of-the-Year for five straight seasons (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024).
After the 2023-24 season, DSU had won 59 times in the last 63 home games at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State hosted its first-ever national tournament at DSU Fieldhouse in 2023-24 season, winning a pair of games in the opening round and advanced to the national tournament’s final site for the fourth time in the last five years.
DSU advanced to the NAIA national quarterfinals for the third time in the last four seasons and finished with an overall record of 28-7 in 2023-24.
Moe coached Savannah Walsdorf as NAIA Women’s Basketball All-America First Team, marking the fifth consecutive year that DSU had a women’s basketball being named to NAIA All-America list. She shattered numerous school records, including all-time points scored, rebounds, steals, and field goals made.
Two Trojans – Walsdorf and Tabor Teel – were selected to 2023-24 NSAA All-Conference First Team. Teel was voted as the league’s Most Valuable Defense Player Award.
Dakota State had recorded at least 27 victories since the 2020-21 season, including a school-record 29 victories during the historic 2022-23 season.
Moe guided the 2022-23 season to one of the most memorable years in women’s basketball program history. Despite a slow start with a 0-3 record, the Trojans turned around the season with a new school record 29 victories in the final 33 contests (29-7 overall record), including a trip to their first-ever trip to the NAIA Women’s Basketball national semifinals in program history as a No. 6 seed in the Liston Bracket. The Trojans also cruised to their third consecutive NSAA regular-season title.
Two Trojan athletes were named to the 2023 NAIA National All-Tournament teams. Walsdorf was named to the All-Tournament First Team, while Elsie Aslesen was named to the All-Tournament Second Team.
Aslesen was listed as the 2022-23 NAIA Women’s Basketball All-America Third Team. Walsdorf was named to the All-America Honorable Mention, the first time since 2008 when DSU had two athletes listed on the NAIA All-American teams.
Aslesen and Walsdorf each were named to the North Star Athletic Association Women’s Basketball First Team in 2022-23. Aslesen was voted as the league’s Defensive Player-of-the-Year. In addition, Caitlin Dyer was named as the NSAA Freshman-of-the-Year. Sidney Fick was listed on the NSAA All-Conference honorable mention.
Aslesen and Courtney Menning were named to the first ever NSAA All-Defensive Team in 2022-23 for their excellence in defense.

Moe led the 2021-22 squad to another historic season with back-to-back North Star Athletic Association Women’s Basketball regular season and postseason titles sweep. The Trojans tied the school record for most wins with 27 victories. Dakota State qualified for the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament for the second straight season, falling short to the host-team Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in the Round of 32.
He coached Jessi Giles to an all-time scorer’s in DSU women’s basketball program history with 1,955 points, 697 career field goals made, and 327 free-throws made from 2018-22.
