Matthew Vargas brings a wealth of experience to the Trojan staff with head coaching experience at the junior college level. Vargas has coached at NJCAA institutions Pima Community College and the athletic department he started, on the Tohono O’odham Nation (Tohono O’odham Community College). Vargas’s coaching experience goes beyond the Southwest region. He served as head coach at Grays Harbor College and Wenatchee Valley Community College, from 2018 to 2025.
Vargas coached in the NJCAA D2 National Tournament, the NWAC Championship Tournament, and in three NJCAA Region 1 Championship games. Vargas has eight years of athletic director experience and has coached two international youth national teams (Team Rwanda and Team China).
Coach Vargas has a bachelor’s degree in Native American studies. Coach Vargas has four children (Abigayle, Daimon, Luke and Beckett).
