DSU Lady T's pull away from Bulldogs, win third straight game

DES MOINES, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) earned a nine-point lead over McPherson (Kan.) Saturday afternoon on the second day of the AIB (Iowa) Women's Basketball Classic at AIB Activities Center.  The Lady T's outscored the Bulldogs 43-29 in the final twenty minutes to earn a 73-50 victory.

Dakota State went undefeated in the AIB Classic with a 2-0 record and raised their overall record to 4-2.  It was the third straight victory for the Lady T's, the first time since the end of the 2008 season (four straight wins from Feb. 15, 2008 to Feb. 24, 2008).  McPherson dropped to 1-6 overall record.

The Bulldogs had their only lead of the game at 2-0 after Alicia Demerat with eighteen minutes and 46 seconds on the clock, and then it was the Lady T's for the rest of the game.  Sharee Galbraith hit a basket to tie the game at 2-2 with 17:03 left in the first-half.

DSU continued their scoring run, extending their lead to 9-2 with 15:21 remaining before intermission.

McPherson could get no closer than three points at 9-6 (13:17 remaining in the first-half).

Dakota State went on a 19-8 scoring run to earn a double-digit lead at 28-14 with less than four minutes left in the first-half.

The Lady T's held a 30-21 halftime lead over the Bulldogs. 

DSU shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (12-of-32).  MC was held to 28.6 percent from the field (8-of-28).  Both teams made four 3-pointers in the first-half.

The Bulldogs cut Lady T's lead to 41-36 with 11:28 remaining in the game.

Dakota State roared with a 32-14 closing run to secure the victory, including a 15-1 scoring run for a 56-37 lead with 7:13 left in the game.

The Lady T's shot 50 percent in the second half, converting 16 field goals in 32 attempts.  McPherson was 38.5 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes (10-of-26).

All ten Lady T players scored in the game.  Galbraith had a double-double of 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for DSU.  BreeAna Olson added 16 points.  Courtney Hulstein scored 14 points off the bench.  Jayda Swenson had nine points.

Madison Walford earned six rebounds for DSU.  Walford and Galbraith each had a blocked shot.

Hulstein, Kendra Lindblad, Kennedy Wagner and Jordan Hansen each dished out three assists for Dakota State.  Swenson had three steals.

Bailey Brown and Sunny Smart each had 13 points for the Bulldogs.  Callie Atkins added nine points.

Megan Acklin recorded eight rebounds for McPherson.

Dakota State shot 43.8 percent overall from the field (28-of-64) compared to McPherson 33.3 percent (18-of-54).  The Bulldogs were 10-of-28 from the 3-point arc (35.7 percent), while the Lady T's shot 6-of-20 from the 3-point line (30 percent). 

DSU outrebounded MC 42-32 in the game.

McPherson committed 21 turnovers compared to DSU 12 turnovers. 

Dakota State steps aside their regular-season play Tuesday evening.  The Lady T's continue their road action as they visit the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.), current member of NCAA Division II and former member of the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC).  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
