Second-half surge propels Northern State to victory over Dakota State

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball used a big second-half to propel the Wolves to a 78-52 victory over Dakota State Tuesday night at Wachs Arena.  NSU led by four points at halftime, but outscored the Trojans 47-25 in the second-half for the victory.

Dakota State, who was coming off from an 81-76 exhibition victory at Sioux Falls (S.D.) Monday evening, finished their exhibition schedule and remained at 2-5 overall record.  Northern State remained undefeated in five games with a 5-0 overall record.

The Trojans had the first lead of the game as Miguel Sansavour recorded a field goal with nineteen minutes and 21 seconds left on the clock in the first half.

NSU gained their first lead of the game at 7-4 with 14:48 left in the first-half.  The Wolves extended their lead to 23-13 with 7:06 left after a 16-9 scoring run.

DSU was able to trim their deficit to 27-26 after Bryant Allen hit a 3-pointer with 2:56 left. 

Northern State held a 31-27 halftime advantage. 

The Wolves shot 41.4 percent from the field in the first-half (12-of-29) and went 4-for-11 from the 3-point line.  The Trojans shot 40 percent from the field (12-of-30) and 3-of-14 from the 3-point arc.

NSU started the second-half with a 19-5 spurt as their lead grew to 50-32 with 13:42 remaining in the game.

DSU could get no closer than 12 points at 52-40 with less than 11 minutes left as the Wolves sealed the game by maintaining double-digits lead for the rest of the game.

Northern State shot 55.2 percent from the field (16-of-29) in the second-half while Dakota State was held to 33.3 percent (8-of-24). 

Sansavour led the Trojans with 18 points on his 8-for-14 shooting from the field.  Allen added 15 points.  Adam Hofer scored seven points.  Seth Cavanaugh had five points.

Sansavour grabbed nine rebounds for DSU.  Derek Meger earned five boards.

Hofer dished out two assists for Dakota State.  Allen, Hofer, Adam Fideler and Ian Barse each recorded a steal.

Seth Bachand recorded a double-double of 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Wolves.  He was 8-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.  Darin Peterka added 17 points.  Justin Decker scored nine points off the bench.

Tydn Storrusten led NSU with four assists.  Peterka had two steals.  DJ Pollard recorded two blocks.

Northern State shot 48.3 percent overall from the field (28-of-58) compared to Dakota State 37 percent (20-of-54).  The Wolves made eight 3-pointers in 22 attempts while the Trojans hit six 3-pointers in 22 attempts. 

NSU went to the free-throw line 19 times, making 14 free-throws (73.7 percent).  DSU was 6-of-12 free-throws (50 percent).

The Wolves outrebounded the Trojans 44-28.

Dakota State returns back to regular-season action this weekend, competing in the Midland (Neb.) Draemel Classic.  The Trojans will play Mount Mercy (Iowa) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.  The two-day classic takes place at the Events Center in Fremont, Neb.  Saturday's game will be at 2 p.m. (Friday's losers) or at 4 p.m. (Friday's winners) versus Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) or host-team Midland (Neb.).
