Tigers hang on to defeat Lady T's in DSU?s home opener

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) held Dakota State (S.D.) to 36.1 percent shooting from the field Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, hanging on for a 65-60 women's basketball non-conference victory.  The Tigers snapped the Lady T's six consecutive home opener victory.

Dakota State's three-game winning streak came to an end, dropping their overall record to 4-2.  Dakota Wesleyan, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, remained undefeated 2-0 overall record.

Both teams struggled from the field in the opening minutes of the game before Sharee Galbraith made a basket to give Lady T's a 2-0 lead with seven minutes and nine seconds on the clock.

The Tigers held on to a 20-19 after the first quarter, largely part of DWU going 6-of-12 from the 3-point line.

DWU kept their lead between 3- and 5-points for the majority of the second quarter.  Shanna Selby drained a 3-pointer by the halftime's buzzer sound, extending the Tigers lead to 35-29 over the Lady T's.

Dakota Wesleyan was 14-of-30 from the field (46.7 percent), including 7-of-17 from the 3-point line in the first half.  Dakota State was 37.1 percent shooting from the field (13-of-37) and 2-of-6 from the 3-point arc in the first twenty minutes.

DWU outscored DSU 15-14 in the third quarter, maintaining a 50-43 lead.

The Tigers had the biggest lead of the game at 54-45 with 6:02 remaining after a pair of free-throws by Erica Herold.  The Lady T's could get no closer than four occasions (54-50 with 4:13 left; 58-54 with 2:26 remaining; 60-56 with 1:41 left and 62-58 with less than a minute to go).

Kirstin Sabers added a free-throw and Rylie Osthus made a basket in closing seconds of the game as 

the Tigers pulled away for the victory, despite committing 28 turnovers in the game.

The Lady T's outscored the Tigers 17-15 in the final quarter.

Galbraith posted her third straight game with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for Dakota State.  She had four blocked shots in the game.  Kendra Lindblad scored 13 points off the bench.  BreeAna Olson added 10 points.

Madison Walford earned seven boards for DSU.  Lindblad dished out seven assists.

Olson stole the ball five times in the game for the Lady T's.  Kennedy Wagner and Lindblad each added three steals. 

Sabers tallied 18 points off the bench for the Tigers.  Herrold added 13 points.  Amber Bray had 10 points. 

Osthus had eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for DWU.  Ashley Bray added eight rebounds.

Sabers and Gabby Frykbo each produced five assists for Dakota Wesleyan. 

DWU shot 24-of-55 from the field (43.6 percent) compared to DSU 26-of-72 shooting from the field.  The Tigers were 8-of-21 from the 3-point line (38.1 percent), while the Lady T's were 3-of-13 3-pointers.

DSU made all five free-throw attempts in the game.  DWU was 9-of-15 free-throws (60 percent).

Both teams had 41 rebounds in the game.  DSU outscored DWU 14-4 in second-chance points.

Dakota State heads on the road Saturday afternoon to face another in-state rival team, Mount Marty (S.D.).  Tip-off from the Cimpl Arena is set for 4 p.m. in Yankton, S.D.
