Lady T's open up NSAA conference season with victory over V-Hawks

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held Viterbo (Wis.) to 22.1 percent shooting from the field Thursday evening as the Lady T's earned a 57-39 North Star Athletic Association women's basketball conference season opener victory at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Lady T's never trailed in the game.

DSU raised their overall record to 6-2 and 1-0 NSAA conference record.  VU, newcomer to the NSAA conference this year, remained winless in seven games (0-7 overall record) and 0-6 NSAA conference record.

The Lady T's matched their best start in the first eight games since 2007-08 season.

Viterbo missed their first eight shots of the game to allow Dakota State open up with an 8-0 lead.  The V-Hawks halted their scoring drought with a basket made by Bailey Klaas with five minutes and thirty-three seconds left in the quarter (DSU leads 8-2).

The Lady T's gained an 18-9 lead after the first quarter, thanks to 46.7 percent shooting from the field (7-of-15) while holding the V-Hawks to 20 percent shooting (4-of-20).

DSU expanded their lead into double-digit after a basket by Kennedy Wagner for 24-14 lead with less than six minutes left before intermission.

Dakota State held on to a 27-16 advantage over VU.  The Lady T's shot 36.7 percent from the field (11-of-30) compared to the V-Hawks 20 percent (7-of-35). 

Leading 33-23 in the third quarter, DSU went on a 7-0 outburst for a 17-point lead (40-23) with 4:29 on the clock after Kendra Lindblad's 3-pointer and a pair of lay-ups by BreeAna Olson. 

The Lady T's outscored the V-Hawks 22-13 in the third quarter to take a 20-point lead (49-29) before heading into the final quarter.

DSU had the biggest lead of the game after a free-throw made by Jordan Hansen at 52-29 with 7:13 remaining in the game.  VU could get no closer than 17 points at 56-39 with 1:09 left after a pair of free-throws by Bailey Klaas.

Ten different Dakota State players scored in the game.

Galbraith posted her fifth straight double-doubles, scoring 14 points (7-of-11 from the field) and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady T's.  She recorded a game-high six blocks in the game.  Olson added 12 points and stole the ball seven times (tied for seventh-most steals in a single game in DSU Lady T's record book).

Madison Walford and Lindblad each tallied seven points for DSU.  Walford dished out four assists.

Galbraith, Cassie Jones, Lindblad and Hansen each recorded two steals for Dakota State. 

Walford and Kennedy Wagner each earned eight boards for the Lady T's. 

Klaas led the V-Hawks with 11 points.  Lauren Busse added eight points.  Riley Budde had six points.

Whitney Hanson registered a game-high 13 rebounds for Viterbo.  Arissa Geiser had nine rebounds.

Kassi Busse and Kiley Lorenz each produced two assists for the V-Hawks.  Brittney Hattamer stole the ball four times.  Kassi Hofschild added three steals.  Klaas, Busse and Heidi Huebner each had two steals.

Dakota State shot 36.4 percent overall from the field, making 24 baskets in 66 attempts.  Viterbo made 15 field goals in 68 attempts, including 3-of-24 from the 3-point line. 

DSU was 8-of-13 from the free-throw line (61.5 percent) compared to VU 6-of-11 free-throws (54.5 percent).

A total of 103 rebounds were recorded in the game, with the Lady T's earning 52 rebounds and V-Hawks pulling down 51 rebounds.

Both teams had 16 steals in the game.  DSU recorded nine blocks, while VU had six blocks.

The Lady T's outscored the V-Hawks 38-14 inside the paint and 20-11 in points off turnovers.  DSU was 12-0 in fast-break points.

Dakota State completes their brief two-game home stand Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, hosting Trinity Bible (N.D.) in a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m.  Viterbo heads to Winona, Minn. to take on NCAA Division II Winona State (Minn.) in an exhibition game at 4:30 p.m.
