MADISON, S.D. – Presentation (S.D.) swept a pair of North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) softball doubleheader over Dakota State (S.D.) Wednesday afternoon at Thue Softball Complex. The Saints posted scores of 13-0 and 11-2, both games ended in fifth inning.
Dakota State fell to 1-20 overall record and 0-5 NSAA conference record. Presentation improved their overall record to 15-19 and 5-1 NSAA.
Game 1: Presentation (S.D.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/5 innings
PC's Kayla Reynolds held the Trojans to one hit in the first game of the doubleheader, earning a complete game victory.
Both teams were scoreless after two innings before the Saints took the first lead of the game in the top third.
Karyssa Marbet led off with a double for Presentation. Jacque Trost reached on base by a walk. Both runners advanced one base after Shelby Anderson hit a ground out to third base. Brenda Botzenhart recorded an RBI fielder's choice, while Marbet was safe at home to give PC a 1-0 lead (Trost to third base).
The Trojans' defense ended the top third inning with a double play with Kassidy Rauch's line drive to third base, and DSU's Ariana Duran tagged Trost out at third base.
Presentation exploded for five runs in the fourth inning as their lead grew to 6-0. Jessie Ihly and Hailey Haukeli hit back-to-back singles to kick off the fourth inning. A wild pitch by Dakota State advanced Ihly to third and Haukeli to second base. Reynolds hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ihly for PC 3-0 lead.
The Saints made it 4-0 after Marbet's RBI single to score Haukeli in the top fourth inning. Marbet advanced to second base after a wild pitch by the Trojans. Trost added an RBI single to score Marbet to extend PC's lead to 5-0. After Trost swiped to second base, Anderson reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error and allowed Trost to score for six-run PC lead.
Presentation added seven runs in the top fifth inning to expand their lead to 13-0, highlighted by Anderson's 4-RBI grand slam.
Dakota State ended their hitting drought with a single by Lynnie Angle in the bottom fifth inning. The Saints secured the game as the Trojans left one runner on base.
Angle had a hit for DSU. Ellie Kristensen reached on base by a walk. Elizabeth Rubalcava was hit-by-pitch.
Anderson blasted a home run and produced four RBIs for the Saints. Marbet was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Trost and Ihly each had two hits. Botzenhart, Rauch, Haukeli, Reynolds and Shanice Webb each had a hit. Five PC players recorded an RBI in the game.
Presentation outhit Dakota State 13-1 in the game. PC left six runners on base while DSU had six runners left on base.
Kristensen (1-11) recorded the loss from the pitching mound for the Trojans. She worked for 3 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Guadalupe Gomez tossed 2/3 innings in relief, giving up seven runs (one unearned) on six hits. Shai-Lee Hill pitched 2/3 shutout innings in relief.
Reynolds (7-9) earned a complete game victory for the Saints. She recorded five strikeouts.
Game 2: Presentation (S.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
Dakota State raced to a 2-0 opening inning in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Saints scored 11 unanswered runs in the next four innings to complete a sweep.
Lexy Miller reached on base with a one-out bunt single for the Trojans in the bottom first frame. She advanced to second base after Rubalcava was ground out to shortstop. Brittany Hill produced an RBI single to score Miller for DSU's 1-0 lead. Duran added a double to advance Brittany Hill third base. After Harley Lindell reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU, Angle recorded an RBI walk to score Brittany Hill to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0
Presentation scored five times in the top second inning to overtake the lead from Dakota State. Ihly led off with a single. Marbet reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error, advancing Ihly to second base. Webb hit an RBI single to score Ihly as PC trimmed Trojans' lead to 2-1. The Saints tied the game at 2-2 after Megan Mendoca's RBI single to score Marbet.
The Saints continued to score as Anderson hit an RBI single to score Webb for a 3-2 lead in the top second. Botzenhart hit a 2-RBI double to score Mendonca and Anderson to extend PC's lead to 5-2.
Webb hit an RBI sacrifice fly as Presentation added a run in the top third frame for a 6-2 lead.
Marbet added an RBI single, followed by Webb's 2-RBI single to propel Saints' lead to 9-2 in the top fourth inning.
Presentation made it 11-2 lead in the top fifth inning after scoring twice.
Dakota State was unable to extend the game as they left a runner on third base in the bottom fifth, sealing the victory for the Saints.
Duran was 2-of-3 at the plate with two doubles for the Trojans. Brittany Hill added a single and an RBI. Miller had a single and recorded a stolen base. Angle had a walk and an RBI. Lindell and Belter each reached on base by a walk.
Botzenhart and Ihly each had three hits for the Saints. Anderson, Webb and Mendonca each added two singles. Webb collected four RBIs, while Botzenhart had two RBIs.
Presentation had 15 hits in the game compared to Dakota State 4 hits. PC left eight runners on base compared to DSU six runners left on base.
Shai-Lee Hill (0-7) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. She tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (four unearned) on five hits. Kristensen pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief and gave up six runs (two unearned) on 10 hits.
Mendonca (3-6) earned a complete game victory for PC. She worked for five innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Mendonca recorded five strikeouts.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they continue their NSAA conference action Saturday and Sunday. The Trojans play a four-game series with Jamestown (N.D.) at Lyle Lawrence Field. First game for each doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m. in Jamestown, N.D. Presentation stays on the road Saturday and Sunday for a NSAA conference's four-game series at Valley City State (N.D.).
