Lady T's drop NSAA Conference high-scoring affair versus Comets

MADISON, S.D. – Saturday's evening North Star Athletic Association women's basketball game at DSU Fieldhouse saw some extremes between Dakota State (S.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.).  With a total of 55 fouls whistled combined along, total of 76 free-throw attempts and combined 210 points scored in the game, the Comets came on top by the score of 109-101.  The 210 points combined by both teams is the highest scoring game in the history of NSAA women's basketball conference game.

Dakota State fell to 12-11 overall record and 4-3 NSAA record.  Mayville State won their eighth straight meeting in the series meeting, raising their overall record to 14-7 and 5-2 NSAA.

The Lady T's and Comets went through 12 ties and 5 lead changes in the opening period.  Neither team's lead was bigger than three points.  Andi Gayner hit a basket when the first period buzzer sound to give MSU a slim 27-25 lead, thanks to 13-of-16 free-throws by the Comets.  DSU was perfect 8-of-8 free-throws.

The game was tied for the 14th time in the second quarter at 41-41 with less than four minutes on the clock after a field goal by DSU's Kendra Lindblad.  After Lindblad's 3-pointer to give DSU a 44-43 lead, the ninth lead change occurred at 1:37 on the clock when MSU's Jenna Lundon hit a 3-pointer for a 46-44 lead.

Liza Hoglo completed a three-point play with less than five seconds to go in the first-half to extend Comets' lead to 52-46.  Kennedy Wagner nailed down a pair of free-throws by the end of the first-half as DSU cut MSU's lead to 52-48.

The Comets outscored the Lady T's 25-23 in the second period.

Mayville State was 16-of-28 from the field (57.1 percent) in the first twenty minutes compared to Dakota State 16-of-34 field goals (47.1 percent).  MSU was 16-of-19 at the free-throw line while DSU remained perfect 12-of-12 free-throws in the first-half.

Dakota State opened up the third quarter with a 3-poitner by Courtney Hulstein (assisted by Sharee Galbraith), trimming their deficit to 52-51. 

The Comets answered with a 16-7 scoring run to gain the first double-digit lead of the game with 4:16 on the clock when Lundon hit a 3-pointer.

Karleigh Weber drained a 3-pointer by the end of the third quarter as the Comets held on a 79-71 lead.  Mayville State outscored Dakota State 27-23 in the first ten minutes of the second-half.

The Comets maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter between six- and twelve points.  Both teams scored 30 points in the final quarter.

MSU was 16-of-23 from the field in the second-half (62.7 percent) compared to DSU 17-of-34 field goals (50 percent).  The Comets converted 21-of-27 free-throws in the final twenty minutes, while the Lady T's were 12-of-18 free-throws.

Five DSU players scored in double digits, led by Hulstein with 21 points.  She was 6-of-8 from the field, including 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc, and made all four free-throw attempts.  Olson added 16 points.  Madison Walford scored 15 points.  Galbraith tallied 13 points.  Lindbald earned 12 points off the bench.  Cassie Jones scored eight points.

Kennedy Wagner dished out a career-high eight assists for Dakota State.  Lindblad added six assists.  Olson and Lindblad each stole the ball three times.

Galbraith and Olson each grabbed five rebounds for DSU.  Walford had four rebounds.

Hoglo poured in a game-high double-double 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Comets. She was 11-of-14 from the field goals and 6-of-9 free-throws for the Comets.  Joelle Ertl added 26 points (7-of-11 field goals and 10-of-11 free-throws).  Lundon hit five three pointers and added four free-throws for 19 points.  Gayner had 18 points.

Lundon had six rebounds for Mayville State.  Hoglo produced seven assists, while Ertl added six assists. 

MSU shot 32-of-51 overall in the game (62.7 percent) compared to DSU 33-of-68 field goals (48.5 percent).  The Lady T's went 11-of-27 from the 3-point line (40.7 percent), while the Comets were 8-of-14 3-pointers (57.1 percent).

Mayville State went to the free-throw line 46 times, making 37 free-throws (80.4 percent).  Dakota State made 24 free-throws in 30 tries (80 percent).

MSU outrebounded DSU 36-24. 

The Lady T's bench outscored Comets' bench 30-9.

Dakota State swings back on the road Wednesday evening as they continue their NSAA conference play.  The Lady T's visit the nationally-ranked No. 10 Jamestown (N.D.), who remained undefeated in conference play.  Tip-off from the Civic Center is set for 5:30 p.m. in Jamestown, N.D.

Mayville State (N.D.) stays on the road as they battle Valley City State (N.D.) on the same night at 5:30 p.m.  The game will be played at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City, N.D.
