Rozell joins 1,000-kill club in Trojans? 3-0 NSAA home loss to No. 20 Bruins

MADISON, S.D. – Junior Carly Rozell smashed her 1,000th career kill at Dakota State (S.D.) Friday evening, despite losing in three straight sets to No. 20-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) in the North Star Athletic Association volleyball conference match at DSU Fieldhouse.  This was the annual 'Dig Pink' match for the Trojan Volleyball team.

Dakota State fell to 7-16 overall record and 2-6 NSAA.  Bellevue raised their overall record to 18-8 and 6-2 record in the NSAA conference play.

The Trojans and Bruins went through five ties early in the opening set.  Knotted at 7-7, BU went on a 10-2 scoring outburst to grab a 17-9 lead.  Bellevue hit .270 (16 kills with 6 errors in 37 attempts) to earn a 25-18 set one victory for a 1-0 match lead over Dakota State.  DSU hit .095 (10 kills with 6 errors in 42 attempts) in the opening set.

Both DSU and BU went through six ties to kick off the second set.  Tied at 6-6, the Bruins closed the second set with a 19-9 scoring run for a 25-15 victory.  BU hit .345 (14 kills with 4 errors in 29 attempts) compared to DSU .000 hitting efficiency (7 kills with 7 errors in 31 attempts).

Bellevue raced to a 6-0 lead in the third set and never looked back to seal the match after winning 25-16.  The Bruins outhit the Trojans 16-6 in the third set.

Rozell smashed her 1,000th-career kill at Dakota State near the end of the third set, where she smashed her ninth kill of the match.  She finished the match with nine kills, a service ace and a block assist.

Kirstin Johnson added five kills and hit .500 in the match for DSU.  Clarissa Blick had four kills.  Kaylee Vander Wal produced 10 set assists while McKenna DeMoe had six assists.

Chelsey Davis led the Trojans' defense with 11 digs.  Blick had seven digs.  Hannah Bauer recorded a service ace.

Johnson collected four block assists for DSU.  Taylor Stratton and Tessa Weeldreyer each added three block assists.

Shayla Scanlan tallied 12 kills and hit .647 in the match for the Bruins.  Rachel Wald had eight kills.  Maddie Squiers registered 38 assists.

Taylor Holz earned 12 digs for BU.  Verenice Chaparro contributed five service aces and 11 digs.  Michaela Gardner also had 11 digs.

Bellevue outhit Dakota State 46-23 in the match.  The Bruins hit .273 as a team (19 errors in 99 attempts) compared to the Trojans .070 hitting percentage (16 errors in 100 attempts).

The Bruins recorded 50 digs while the Trojans had 31 digs.  DSU had eight team blocks compared to BU two team blocks.

Dakota State looks to swing back in the winning column Tuesday evening as they kick off the second-half portion of the North Star conference schedule.  The Trojans visit Presentation (S.D.) at Strode Center with a 7 p.m. first serve in Aberdeen, S.D.

Bellevue will be making their trip to Aberdeen as they take on Presentation in the North Star match-up Saturday (tomorrow).  First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
