DSU could not overcome HC's second-quarter surge in Doane (Neb.) Classic

CRETE, Neb. – Hastings (Neb.) outrebounded Dakota State (S.D.) 37-22 Saturday afternoon, erasing a 1-point deficit to an 82-51 victory on the second day of the Doane (Neb.) Classic at Haddix Center.  The Broncos outscored the Lady T's 25-4 in the second period.

Dakota State remained winless in six games.  Hastings, who received votes to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 national poll, improved to 4-1 overall record.

Trailing 5-4 in the opening quarter, the Lady T's used a 9-2 scoring run to grab a 13-7 lead with five minutes and five seconds on clock.  The Broncos answered back by scoring seven consecutive points to regain their lead at 14-13 with 2:06 remaining in the first period.

Lindsey Vogl made a basket at the end of the first quarter to give DSU a 15-14 lead.

Knotted at 18-18 in the second quarter, Hastings outscored Dakota State 22-2 in the final 6:34 of the first-half for a 40-20 halftime advantage.

HC was 14-of-28 from the field (50 percent) in the first twenty minutes of the game compared to DSU 8-of-25 field goals (32 percent).

Hastings maintained control for the rest of the game, outscoring Dakota State 42-31 in the second-half.  The Broncos shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the last 20 minutes of the game, while the Lady T's were 55 percent (11-of-20).

Shemika Frazier led the Lady T's with nine points.  Britley Plautz added eight points.  Kennedy Wagner and BreeAna Olson each scored seven points.  Vogl had five points off the bench. 

Plautz grabbed five rebounds for Dakota State.  Olson and Jordan Hansen each had four rebounds.  Cassie Jones and Wagner each dished out three assists. 

Jones, Frzier, Olson and Kelley Criddle each stole the ball once for DSU.

MacKenzie Willicott shot 7-of-9 from the field and made a free-throw for 15 points off the bench for HC.  Jordan Johnson and Rachel Jelden each added 11 points.  Alex Edwards had nine points.

Jelden led all rebounders with seven rebounds for the Broncos.  She also had three steals.  Shandra Farmer and Emma Grenfell each produced four assists. 

Hastings shot 54.5 percent overall from the field (30-of-55) compared to Dakota State 42.2 percent (19-of-45).  HC was 6-of-14 3-pointers, while DSU was 2-of-13 from the 3-point line.  The Broncos were 16-of-22 from the free-throw line (77.8 percent).  The Lady T's made 11 free-throws in 16 attempts (68.8 percent).

Dakota State looks to earn their first victory of the season Tuesday evening as they continue their action on the road.  The Lady T's visit Trinity Bible (N.D.) in a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m.  The game will be held at Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse in Ellendale, N.D.
