Blue Hawks cruise past Lady T's in North Star women?s basketball action

DICKINSON, N.D. – Nationally-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) drained a total of 11 3-pointers in the North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball contest at Scott Gymnasium Wednesday evening, cruising past Dakota State (S.D.) by the score of 90-58.

The Lady T's, which concluded their four-game NSAA road trip, fell to 1-10 overall record and 0-4 NSAA conference record.  The Blue Hawks, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, lifted their overall record to 6-3 and 3-1 record in the North Star.

Dakota State grabbed its first lead of the game at 2-0 after a field goal by BreeAna Olson with nine minutes and forty-three seconds on the clock. 

The Lady T's and Blue Hawks went through three lead changes and one tie in the first 3:35 of the game.  Knotted at 8-8, Dickinson State outscored Dakota State 20-5 in the final 5:46 of the first quarter to earn a 15-point lead at 28-13.

The Blue Hawks continued their scoring run, outscoring DaSU 20-11 in the second period as their lead grew to 48-24 by halftime.

Dickinson State maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the second-half.  DiSU outscored DaSU 27-24 in the third period and 15-10 in the final quarter.

Ten Lady T's scored in the game, led by Olson with 13 points.  Lindsey Vogl was 3-of-3 from the 3-point arc and earned nine points.  Kelsey Poppen (4-of-5 field goals) and Britley Plautz (3-of-5 field goals and made both free-throw attempts) each scored eight points off the bench.  Shelby Vogel tallied six points.

Vogel grabbed six rebounds for Dakota State.  Jamie Tebben, Shemika Frazier and Olson each added four rebounds.  Cassie Jones produced three assists, while Kennedy Wagner had two assists.

Wagner recorded two blocked shots for DaSU.  Jones, Frazier, Olson and Jordan Hansen each registered a steal.

Lorna Shepherd was 10-of-13 from the field, including a perfect 6-of-6 3-pointers to score a game-high 26 points for the Blue Hawks.  Taylor Henningsgard posted a double-double of 11 points and dished out 11 assists.  Ashley Bentz-Laub and Megan Klein each had 12 points.  Paitton Herbst had 11 points off the bench.

Klein had a double-double with 10 rebounds for DiSU.  Herbst stole the ball three times.  Kate Golding had four blocked shots.

Dickinson State shot 46.7 percent overall from the field (35-of-75) compared to Dakota State 38.5 percent (20-of-52).  The Blue Hawks were 37.9 percent from the 3-point line, while the Lady T's were 4-of-18 3-pointers (22.2 percent).

DaSU converted 14-of-19 free-throws (73.7 percent).  DiSU was 9-of-11 free-throws (81.8 percent).

The Blue Hawks outrebounded the Lady T's 43-31.  The Blue Hawks outscored the Lady T's 22-2 in second-chance points.

DaSU scored 32 points off the bench compared to DiSU 24 bench points.

Dakota State returns home at DSU Fieldhouse Friday evening as they continue their North Star conference play.  The Lady T's look for their first NSAA conference win of the season as they host Waldorf (Iowa) with a tip-off starting at 5:30 p.m.
