JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) used a strong closing run Saturday afternoon, securing the North Star Athletic Association Softball doubleheader sweep over Dakota State (S.D.) at Lawrence Field. After DSU grabbed its first lead at 2-0 in the first game, UJ scored 10 straight runs for a 10-2 game one victory. The Jimmies outscored the Trojans 7-0 in the final 2 2/3 innings for a 10-1 game two win.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-8 and 0-6 NSAA conference record. Jamestown improved their overall record to 19-6 and 4-1 NSAA conference.
Both teams complete their NSAA four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader at Lawrence Field. The first game is set for 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Jamestown (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/6 innings
The Trojans scored its first runs of the game in the opening inning. Peyton Brokiewicz hit a single with one out. Elizabeth Rubalcava smashed a 2-run home run to give DSU a 2-0 lead. It was her first home run of the season, her third career home run at Dakota State.
The Jimmies answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Emily Newman recorded an RBI double and Brittany Rheault added an RBI sacrifice fly to knot the game at 2-2.
UJ took a 3-2 lead in the bottom third frame. Sydney Jeffers led off with a triple, followed by Rylee Perez's RBI sacrifice bunt to score Jeffers.
Linda Ontiveros hit an RBI single to extend Jamestown's lead to 4-2 in the bottom fourth inning.
The Jimmies scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory. Autumn Wang ended the game with an RBI single with two outs.
Rubalcava led Dakota State with a home run and two RBIs. Brokiewicz and Audrey Kosman each added a single.
Newman tallied three doubles and three RBIs for Jamestown. Jeffers added a triple, single and scored four times. Wang added a single and two RBIs. Hanna Dunnigan, Sydney Greelund and Ontiveros each had a hit.
UJ outhit DSU 10-3 in the game. Both teams left four runners on base.
Kosman (L, 1-4) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. She tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed ten runs (four unearned) on 10 hits.
Brittany Rheault (W, 8-3) earned a complete game victory for the Jimmies. She gave up two runs on three hits and recorded six strikeouts.
Game 2 – Jamestown (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL/6 innings
Jamestown exploded for three runs in the bottom first in the second game of the doubleheader. Newman had an RBI single for UJ's first run of the game. The Jimmies added two more runs caused by DSU's defensive error for a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans got on board with a run scored in the top fourth inning. April Pisk led off with a single, followed by Tatum Ronke's double to advance Pisk to third base. Ariana Duran hit an RBI single to score Pisk as DSU trimmed UJ's lead to 3-1.
Dunnigan blasted a solo home run to put Jamestown up 4-1 in the bottom fourth. She added a 2-RBI single in the fifth inning as Jamestown expanded their lead to 6-1.
Jamestown finished the game in the bottom sixth frame with four runs scored. Wang hit a 2-run home run with two outs to end the game.
Rubalcava collected two singles for the Trojans. Kosman and Ronke each had a double. Duran recorded a single and an RBI. Pisk and Lynnie Angle each had a hit.
UJ's Dunnigan went 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, single and produced four RBIs. Newman and Wang each had a hit and two RBIs. Jeffers, Connie Miller, Dani Norsby, Greenlund, Brook Rheault and Kylie Macaig each added a hit.
Jamestown recorded 10 hits in the game compared to Dakota State 8 hits. The Trojans had seven runners left on base while the Jimmies left four runners on base.
Claire Fischer (L, 1-3) took the loss on the mound for DSU. She pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up 10 runs (four unearned) on 10 hits.
Dunnigan (W, 7-2) earned the victory as she worked for six innings. She allowed one run on eight hits and struck out 11 Trojans' batters.
