JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) earned another North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Field. The Jimmies won in 15-8 slugfest in the first game and rolled to a 10-2 game two victory over the Trojans.
Dakota State fell to 2-10 overall record and 0-8 NSAA conference. Jamestown raised their overall record to 21-6 and 6-1 NSAA.
Game 1 – Jamestown (N.D.) 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 8 – FINAL
The Jimmies opened up with a 2-0 lead. Sydney Jeffers led off with a single and swiped to second base. Rylee Perez hit an RBI single to score Jeffers for UJ's 1-0 lead. After Emily Newman hit a single and advanced Perez to third base, Perez stole for home for UJ's two-run lead.
Dakota State answered back with three runs scored in the top third inning. Peyton Brokiewicz and Kayla Schmell hit back-to-back doubles, giving the Trojans its first run of the game. Audrey Kosman smashed a 2-run home run, her first career home run, as Dakota State earned their first lead at 3-2.
Jamestown scored twice in the bottom third frame to regain their lead at 4-3.
The second lead change occurred in the top fourth where DSU scored four runs. Harley Lindell reached on a walk with two outs. Brokiewicz blasted a 2-run home run as the Trojans took a 5-4 lead.
The Trojans continued their scoring surge in the fourth inning was Schmell followed up with a single. Elizabeth Rubalcava hit a 2-run home run as Dakota State expanded their lead to 7-4.
UJ recorded seven straight hits and produced four runs with two outs in the bottom fourth inning as they earned an 8-7 lead, the fourth lead change in the game.
DSU knotted the game at 8-8 in the top fifth. Tatum Ronke led off with a single. She swiped to second base. Lindell hit an RBI single to score Ronke for the fifth tie recorded in the game.
Jamestown scored four more runs in the bottom fifth inning for a 12-8 lead, highlighted by a pair of doubles from Autumn Wang and Hanna Dunnigan.
The Jimmies continued their offense surge with three runs scored in the sixth inning, extending their lead to 15-8.
DSU left one runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for UJ.
Kosman went 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single and produced two RBIs for the Trojans. Brokiewicz added two hits (home run and double) and produced two RBIs. Rubalcava had a home run and two RBIs. Schmell recorded a double, single and an RBI. Ronke also had two hits. April Pisk, Kylee Pospisil and Lindell each had a hit.
Kosman and Ronke each swiped one base for Dakota State.
Perez was perfect at the plate, going 5-of-5 with five runs scored and collected five RBIs for the Jimmies. Newman and Emma Keller each had three hits. Jeffers, Wang, Keley Halverson and Dunnigan each added two hits.
Jamestown outhit Dakota State 20-12 in the game. Both teams left seven runners on base.
Kosman (L, 1-5) took the loss on the mound for the Trojans. She tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up 12 runs (1 unearned) on 15 hits. Ashley Olson pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs on five hits.
Brittany Rheault started the game for the Jimmies. She pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits. Keller (W, 5-1) earned the victory after working for 3 1/3 innings in relief. She limited DSU to one run on three hits.
Game 2 – Jamestown (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
Jamestown hit four doubles by Perez, Newman, Dani Norsby and Dunnigan in the opening inning to grab a 3-0 early lead in the second game of the doubleheader.
Ronke blasted her first career home run in the top second inning with one out as the Trojans cut UJ's lead to 3-1.
UJ scored twice in the bottom third inning. Perez led off with a triple and scored home caused by DSU's defensive error on the same play for Jimmies' 4-1 lead. Dunningan added an RBI single to make it 5-1 in favor of Jamestown.
The Jimmies scored five times in the bottom fourth as their lead grew to 10-1.
DSU's Rubalacava hit a home run in the top fifth inning, but UJ sealed the game with a 10-2 victory.
Ronke and Rubalcava each had a home run, single and an RBI for the Trojans. Lindell added a hit.
Norsby had two doubles and two RBIs for the Jimmies. Perez added a triple, double and single with two RBIs. Dunnigan and Newman each had two hits and two RBIs.
Jamestown outhit Dakota State 10-6 in the game. DSU left five runners on base compared to UJ two runners left on base.
Olson (L, 0-2) pitched for two-plus innings and allowed four runs on seven hits for the Trojans. Claire Fischer came in for 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed five runs on six hits. Shai-Lee Hill worked for two outs, yielding one run on one hit.
Dunnigan (W, 8-2) earned a complete game win for Jamestown. She gave up two runs on six hits.
Dakota State looks to halt their losing skid as they stay on the road Thursday afternoon, visiting Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader. First game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. held at the Bishop Mueller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff.
