Lady T's pull away past Flames 92-77 in Coach Moe's coaching debut

MADISON, S.D. – Trailing 26-18 after the first ten minutes of a women's basketball season opener game Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, Dakota State (S.D.) outscored College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 74-51 for the rest of the game to earn a 92-77 victory.  It was the season opener game for both teams.

The Lady T's – under the guidance of first year head coach David Moe – and the Flames went through four ties and eight lead changes in the opening quarter.  DSU opened up with a 16-12 lead with two minutes and thirty-seven seconds on the clock after a pair of free-throws by Kennedy Wagner.

CSM closed the first quarter with a 14-2 outburst, gaining an eight-point cushion over the Lady T's.  The Flames were 10-of-26 from the field (38.5 percent) compared to the Lady T's 4-of-13 field goals (30.8 percent).

College of Saint Mary continued their scoring outburst to kick off the second quarter for a double-digit lead at 28-18 with 9:47 on the clock.  The Lady T's stormed back with a 7-0 run to cut CSM's lead to 28-25 with less than eight minutes to go, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Lindsey Vogl.

Dakota State continued its comeback and knotted the game for the fifth time at 37-37 after a basket by Wagner with 2:02 left in the first-half.

Raven Patton knocked down a pair of free-throws with less than 25 seconds remaining to break a 41-41 tie into a 43-41 Lady T's halftime lead.   The Lady T's outscored the Flames 25-15 in the second quarter.

DSU shot 46.4 percent from the field (13-of-28), including 5-of-13 from the 3-point line in the first-half.  The Lady T's were 12-of-13 free-throws (92.3 percent).  CSM was held to 31.9 percent field goal shooting (15-of-47), 3-of-13 from the 3-point arc (23.1 percent) and 8-of-14 free-throws (57.1 percent).  Both teams grabbed 25 rebounds, with the Flames outrebounding the Lady T's 14-4 on the offensive boards.

Dakota State opened up the third quarter after going 4-of-5 from the field, stretching their lead to 51-43 with 7:40 on the clock. 

Patton completed a 3-point play near the end of the third quarter, giving the Lady T's a 65-58 lead.  DSU outscored CSM 22-17, thanks to a blazing 58.8 percent shooting from the field (10-of-17 field goals).  CSM was held to 36.8 percent field goal shooting in the third quarter (7-of-19 field goals).

After the Flames trimmed Lady T's down to three points at 65-62 in the fourth quarter, DSU went on a 6-0 scoring run from three different scorers (Patton, Leah Marsh and Vogl) to expand their lead to 71-62 with 7:14 left.

Leading 74-68, Dakota State pulled away by scoring 14 consecutive points for the biggest lead of the game at 88-68 with 3:37 remaining.  The Lady T's drained three 3-pointers (Wagner, Shelby Vogel and Vogl) in during their outburst.

DSU outscored CSM 27-19 in the final quarter to secure the victory.  The Lady T's shot a sizzling 56.3 percent from the field (18-of-32) in the second-half while holding the Flames to 32.6 percent (15-of-46).

Vogl poured in a career-high 25 points for Dakota State.  She was 8-of-9 from the field, including 7-of-8 from the 3-point line.  Wagner added 16 points on her 6-of-9 field goal shooting.  Patton scored 12 points off the bench.  Britley Plautz tallied 11 points (5-of-6 field goals).  Vogel and Alison Scheetz each scored eight points.

Wagner contributed seven assists for the Lady T's.  Scheetz added four assists.  Wagner and Scheetz each stole the ball three times.  Patton and Plautz each had two steals.

Patton registered four blocked shots for DSU.  Plautz added two blocks.  Jamie Tebben and Plautz each pulled down eight rebounds.  Patton earned six rebounds.

Lacey Knudsen led the Flames with 19 points.  Tyler Sumpter added 12 points.  Corryne Millet posted a double-double of 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.  Lynsey Curran scored nine points off the bench.

Ashley Nelson produced four assists for CSM.  Alyssa Laudato had three assists.  Knudsen, Sumpter and Ember Sloan each stole the ball two times. 

Dakota State shot 51.7 percent overall from the field, making 31 baskets in 60 attempts.  The Lady T's drained 10 3-pointers in 25 tries (40 percent).  College of Saint Mary was 32.3 percent from the field (30-of-93) and 4-of-26 from the 3-point line (15.4 percent).

DSU was 20-of-26 free-throws (76.9 percent) compared to CSM 13-of-22 free-throws (59.1 percent).

The Flames outrebounded the Lady T's 52-46 in the game.  College of Saint Mary grabbed 28 offensive boards compared to the Lady T's 8 offensive boards.

DSU outscored CSM 11-4 in fast-break opportunities.

Dakota State plays their first road game of the season on Wednesday evening, visiting Dordt (Iowa).  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at DeWitt Gymnasium in Sioux Center, Iowa.
