SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) earned a seven-point halftime lead over Dordt (Iowa) Wednesday evening in a women's basketball non-conference action at DeWitt Gymnasium. The Lady T's could not overcome the Defenders' second-half surge, where DC outscored DSU 51-33 in the final twenty minutes of the game for an 86-75 victory.
Dakota State fell to 1-1 overall record. It was the season opener for Dordt.
The Lady T's opened up with a 19-12 lead after the first quarter. DSU was 6-of-15 from the field (40 percent) and 6-of-8 free-throws in the first ten minutes of the game. DC was held to 5-of-20 field goals (25 percent) and 1-of-2 free-throws.
Dakota State earned their first double-digit lead of the game at 24-14 after a basket by Britley Plautz with 9:14 on the clock. Dordt would trim DSU's lead to 28-26 after a 12-4 run with 3:56 to go in the second-half.
The Lady T's increased their lead to seven points by halftime at 42-35, thanks to a field goal by Raven Patton at the halftime buzzer. DSU was 14-of-30 from the field in the first-half (46.7 percent), while holding DC to 12-of-40 field goals (30 percent).
Dakota State regained their double-digit lead at 48-37 after a 2-point field goal by Kennedy Wagner with 8:23 to go in the third quarter.
With DSU leading 58-47, Dordt stormed back by with an 18-2 outburst to earn a 65-60 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period. Lindsey Vogl drained a 3-pointer as the Lady T's trimmed their deficit by two points by the end of the third quarter at 65-63.
Dordt outscored Dakota State 30-21 in the third quarter.
Dakota State was held to four points in the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter. The Defenders outscored the Lady T's 18-4 to grab the biggest lead of the game at 83-67 with 1:58 remaining and never looked back.
Nine different Lady T's players scored in the game, led by Jamie Tebben with 12 points (5-of-11 field goals). Cassie Jones and Patton (5-of-6 field goals) each scored 10 points off the bench. Shelby Vogel and Leah Marsh each tallied nine points. Vogl scored eight points. Wagner had seven points.
Plautz pulled down 10 rebounds and recorded three blocks for DSU. Patton added two blocked shots. Tebben earned seven boards. Wagner had five rebounds.
Vogl produced three assists for Dakota State. Alison Scheetz had two assists and three steals.
Erika Feenstra had game-highs of 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Defenders. She was 6-of-12 from the field and 7-of-7 free-throws. Rachel Evavold added 21 points (10-of-15 field goals) and 8 rebounds. Annie Rhinesmith had 14 points and dished out 9 assists. Payton Harmsen had 11 points.
Ebby Prewitt stole the ball five times for Dordt. Evavold registered four blocked shots.
The Lady T's shot 45 percent overall from the field (27-of-60) while holding the Defenders to 35.9 percent (28-of-78). DC drained 11 3-pointers in 35 attempts (31.4 percent) compared to DSU 5-of-16 3-pointers (31.3 percent).
Dordt converted 19-of-21 free-throws (90.5 percent). Dakota State was 16-of-23 from the free-throw line (69.6 percent).
DC outrebounded DSU 46-42 in the game. The Lady T's bench outscored the Defenders' bench 35-13.
Dakota State hosts the second annual South Dakota NAIA Basketball Classic at the Sanford Pentagon this weekend. The Lady T's play Mount Marty (S.D.) Saturday with a tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
