DSU men's basketball falls short in double overtime to Grand View (Iowa)

MADISON, S.D. – Grand View (Iowa) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 18-11 in second overtime for a thrilling 116-109 non-conference men's basketball victory at DSU Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.  The Trojans dropped their third straight game.

DSU is 3-4 overall record.  Grand View, a member of NAIA Division I Men's Basketball, improved to 2-1 overall record.

After the Vikings held their lead for the first two minutes of the game, the Trojans took control for the rest of the first-half.  Trailing 6-2, the Trojans went on a 20-10 scoring run to open up a 22-16 lead with 12:37 on the clock after a basket by Bobby Farquah (assisted by Josh McGreal).

Hanging on to a one-point lead at 28-27, Dakota State made five consecutive baskets as part of their 13-4 outburst to earn the first biggest lead of the game at 41-31 with 5:37 to go in the first-half.  Kevin Daniels made a pair of 3-pointers, while Keeon Johnson added a 3-pointer as well as a pair of field goals by Justin Folkers during DSU's scoring run.

The Vikings trimmed Trojans' lead to 42-40 with 2:38 on the clock after a basket by Jjuan Hadnot.  DSU went on a 5-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 47-40.  Nathan Washington made a basket with less than 15 seconds to as GVU cut DSU's lead to 47-42 by halftime.

Dakota State shot a blazing 62.1 percent from the field (18-of-29 field goals), including 8-of-14 from the 3-point line.  Grand View was 54.5 percent from the field (18-of-33) and 4-of-11 3-pointers.

DSU held a 54-47 lead with 16:40 left in the game.  GVU went on a 19-8 scoring run to regain their lead at 66-62 with 8:11 to go in the game. 

The Vikings build up a seven-point lead at 79-72 with 1:44 left, forcing the Trojans to use one of their timeouts.

Dakota State mounted a furious comeback in the final 1:21 in the game.  Folkers hit a basket as the Trojans trailed at 79-74.  After a missed free-throw by Hadnot, Daniels completed a 3-point play with just a minute left in the game as GVU's lead went down to 79-77.

A field goal by Washington gave Grand View an 81-77 lead with less than 45 seconds to go in the game.  DSU missed a 3-pointer shot and then committed a foul on the Vikings.  Jordan Brunkow made 1-of-2 free-throw to extend Grand View's lead to 82-77.

Arrington drained a 3-pointer with 18.8 seconds remaining as the Trojans cut Vikings' lead to 82-80.  Washington added a pair of free-throws to put Grand View up 84-80.

Daniels quickly drove down the lane and made a lay-up with 13.8 seconds to go as DSU trailed at 84-82.  The Trojans committed a foul on the ensuing possession.

Brunkow missed both free-throws with less than 12 seconds to go and was rebounded by Arrington for DSU.  Daniels made a lay-up with five seconds to go in the game as Dakota State knotted the game at 84-84.

Hadnot's 3-pointer shot at the buzzer did not go in as the Trojans completed a comeback and forced into extra-period.

Grand View outscored Dakota State 42-37 in the second-half.

Knotted at 86-86 in the first overtime, the Vikings went on a 5-0 scoring run to grab a 91-86 lead with 3:35 on the clock.  The Trojans would answer back with a 7-0 spurt to regain their lead at 93-91 with 1:08 to go after a pair of free-throws by Brendon Boomsma.

Corey Evers nailed down both free-throws as the Vikings tied the game at 93-93 with 41 seconds remaining in overtime.  Daniels then drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans took a 96-93 lead with 23.2 seconds left.

After a pair of missed baskets by the Vikings and was able to convert on the third offense rebound opportunity.  Hadnot made a lay-up with 6.7 seconds to go as DSU maintained its 96-95 lead.

A foul committed by the Vikings to send Folkers to the free-throw line for DSU with 6.7 seconds left.  Folkers made both free-throws to put Dakota State up 98-95.

Hadnot saved the Vikings as he drained a 3-pointer with just 1.1 seconds left to tie the game for the seventh time at 98-98.  GVU forced the game into second overtime.

Dakota State was 4-of-5 from the field and 5-of-5 free-throws in the first overtime.  Grand View was 5-of-9 from the field and 2-of-2 free-throws.

The Vikings opened up the second overtime period with a 4-0 run for a 102-98 lead with 3:32 left.  The Trojans could not get any closer than three points at 102-99 with 3:03 remaining.

Grand View went on a 9-2 scoring run to earn a 111-101 lead with less than 50 seconds to go and never looked back. 

GVU shot 4-of-7 from the field and converted 10-of-14 free-throws in second overtime.  DSU was 4-of-10 from the field and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Daniels poured in a career-high 37 points for the Trojans (tied for 11th-most points scored in a single game in the Trojan men's basketball record book – J.F. Jensen versus Mayville State, N.D. on Feb. 1, 2003).  He was 15-of-27 from the field and made both free-throws.  His 15 field goals tied for fourth-most field goals made in a single-game in the DSU men's basketball record book.  Daniels also had eight rebounds and dished out eight assists.

Folkers posted a double-double of 27 points (10-of-18 field goals and 4-of-4 free-throws) for DSU.  Johnson scored 17 points (6-of-10 field goals) and produced eight assists.  Farquah scored 12 points off the bench. 

McGreal earned five rebounds for Dakota State.  Falcon Albers recorded three steals.  Arrington and Farquah each had a blocked shot.  Arrington stole the ball twice.  Daniels and McGreal each had one steal.

Six GVU players scored in double-figures, led by Hadnot with a double-double of 26 points and collected 13 rebounds.  He was 11-of-20 from the field.  Evers added a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Washington scored 22 points.  Brunkow had 19 points.  Jordan Tanner scored 16 points.  Tyler Williams tallied 10 points off the bench.

Brunkow registered eight rebounds in the game for the Vikings.  Washington and Williams each added six rebounds.  Hadnot dished out six assists, while Washington had five assists.  Tanner, Brunkow and Evers each had a blocked shot.

Both teams shot 50.6 percent overall from the field.  The Vikings converted 41 baskets in 81 attempts, while the Trojans were 40-of-79 from the field.  DSU was 14-of-37 from the 3-point line (37.8 percent) compared to GVU 11-of-28 3-pointers (39.3 percent).

Grand View went to the free-throw line 36 times, converting 23 free-throws (63.9 percent).  Dakota State was 15-of-19 free-throws (78.9 percent).

The Vikings outrebounded the Trojans 50-38 in the game.  GVU outscored DSU 14-0 in second-chance points. 

Dakota State looks to snap their three-game losing skid Tuesday evening as they continue their four-game home stand.  The Trojans host Trinity Bible (N.D.) in a non-conference game with a tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
