HASTINGS, Neb. – Hastings (Neb.) opened up the women's basketball game with a 10-0 run Friday afternoon and never looked back for a 77-32 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) on the first day of the Hastings Thanksgiving Classic at Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady T's fell to 3-6 overall record. The Broncos, who are ranked No. 20 in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll, raised their overall record to 5-1.
Hastings scored ten straight points in the first 2 minutes, 35 seconds of the game to take a 10-0 lead. Dakota State ended its scoring drought with a 3-pointer by Kennedy Wagner (assisted by Lindsey Vogl) with 6:58 on the clock in the first period (DSU trailed 10-3).
The Broncos shot 60 percent from the field (9-of-15 field goals) to take a 19-10 lead over the Lady T's by the end of the first quarter. DSU was held to 30.8 percent from the field (4-of-13 field goals).
HC used another 10-0 run to kick off the second period, extending their lead to 29-10 with 6:02 on the clock. DSU ended their drought with a 3-pointer by Jamie Tebben (assisted by Wagner) with 5:30 to go before intermission (Lady T's trailed 29-13).
Hastings outscored Dakota State 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 38-20 halftime lead. The Broncos shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first-half (18-of-33 field goals) compared to the Lady T's 36.4 percent (8-of-22 field goals).
The Broncos outscored the Lady T's 39-12 in the second-half.
Tebben led Dakota State with seven points and pulled down seven rebounds. Leah Marsh scored five points off the bench. Wagner and Kelley Criddle each tallied four points.
Britley Plautz collected six rebounds and registered four blocked shots for the Lady T's. Shelby Vogel added five rebounds and stole the ball four times. Vogel and Wagner each dished out two assists.
HC's Mackenzie Willicott shot 9-of-12 from the field and went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line for 19 points. She had four steals. Shandra Farmer added 11 points. Rachel Jelden had 10 points and contributed five assists. Gabby Grasso had seven points and earned six boards.
Hastings shot 45.7 percent overall from the field (32-of-70) while holding Dakota State to 26.0 percent (13-of-50). The Lady T's were 5-of-20 3-pointers compared to the Broncos' 3-of-12 from the 3-point arc.
HC was 10-of-15 from the free-throw line (66.7 percent). DSU was 1-of-4 free-throws.
The Broncos outrebounded the Lady T's 38-35. Hastings outscored Dakota State 33-7 in points off turnovers and 44-12 inside the paint.
Dakota State looks to snap their losing skid Saturday afternoon as they play Doane (Neb.) on the second day of the Hastings Thanksgiving Classic. The game is slated for 1 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena.
