Doane (Neb.) defeats Lady T's on second day of Thanksgiving Classic

HASTINGS, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to an 8-2 early lead over Doane (Neb.) on the second day of the Hastings (Neb.) Thanksgiving Classic at Lynn Farrell Arena.  The Lady T's could not hold on to their lead as the Tigers earned a 78-48 victory.

Dakota State dropped their fourth straight game, falling to 3-7 overall record.  Doane, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 4-5 overall record.

Both teams struggled to score in the first two minutes of the game.  The Lady T's took the first lead of the game at 2-0 after a basket by Britley Plautz (assisted by Kennedy Wagner) with 7:47 on the clock.

After Doane tied the game at 2-2, DSU went on a 6-0 scoring spurt from three different scorers (Jamie Tebben, Wagner and Plautz) to earn an 8-2 lead with less than six minutes to go in the first period.

The Tigers closed the first period with a 16-2 outburst in the final 5:11 to gain an 18-10 lead. 

Doane outscored Dakota State 21-13 in the second quarter for a 39-23 halftime lead.  The Lady T's shot 47.8 percent in the first-half (11-of-23 field goals) compared to the Tigers 43.2 percent (16-of-37 field goals).

DU maintained its double digit lead for the rest of the game.  Both teams scored 14 points in the third period, while Doane outscored Dakota State 25-11 in the final period.

Plautz led the Lady T's with 14 points (7-of-9 field goals).  She also had eight rebounds and recorded four blocked shots.  Shelby Vogel added seven points.  Tebben had six points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  Wagner scored nine points and dished out three assists.  Kelley Criddle had two blocked shots.

McKenna Dodd poured in 20 points for the Tigers.  She also stole the ball eight times and dished out six assists.  Cortney Arkfeld posted a double-double of 13 points and collected 10 rebounds.  She added four steals.  Haylee Heits scored 14 points off the bench. 

Doane shot 41.7 percent overall from the field (30-of-72 field goals) compared to Dakota State 37.5 percnet (18-of-48 field goals).  The Tigers drained eight 3-pointers in 14 attempts while the Lady T's were 3-of-16 3-pointers.

DU was 10-of-14 free-throws (71.4 percent) compared to DSU 9-of-16 free-throws (56.3 percent). 

The Lady T's outrebounded the Tigers 36-35. 

Doane outscored Dakota State 31-13 in points off turnovers and 34-9 in bench points.  The Lady T's outscored the Tigers 26-22 inside the paint.

Dakota State returns back home to kick off their six-game home stand, including nine of the next ten games at home at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Lady T's open up their North Star conference season Friday versus the conference's defending champion No. 9-ranked Jamestown (N.D.).  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Madison, S.D.
