Lady T's second-half outburst not enough as Lancers hold on to win 82-75

MADISON, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) built up a 25-point lead over Dakota State (S.D.) in the first-half in a non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Lady T's used a second-half outburst to trim Lancers' into single-digit, but fell by the score of 82-75.

Dakota State, who concluded their nine-game regular-season home stand Tuesday, dropped their overall record to 6-13.  Mount Marty moved a game above .500 with 10-9 overall record.

The Lady T's opened up with a 3-0 lead in the early going of the game with eight minutes and forty-two seconds on the clock.  The Lancers went on an 18-2 run to earn an 18-5 lead with 4:12 to go in the first-quarter.

Mount Marty held a 22-12 lead after the first ten minutes of the game.  The Lancers were 7-of-20 from the field (35 percent) in the first period while holding the Lady T's to 5-of-17 field goals (29.4 percent). 

MMC kicked off the second quarter with a 17-2 run to post the biggest lead of the game at 39-14 with 4:32 remaining. 

Kelley Criddle made a basket just few ticks before the halftime buzzer as DSU trimmed MMC's lead to 41-22.  The Lancers shot 41.7 percent in the first-half (15-of-36), including 7-of-18 from the 3-point arc.  The Lady T's struggled from the field, shooting 26.5 percent (9-of-34 field goals) and 1-of-8 3-pointers.

Trailing 46-22 in the third quarter, Dakota State stormed back with a 17-2 outburst to cut MMC's lead down to 48-39 with 3:22 on the clock. 

Cassie Jones made a basket with less than 15 seconds to go as DSU trailed at 54-47 in the third.  MMC's Sarah Castaneda drained a 3-pointer to balloon their lead to 57-47 by the end of the third quarter.

Dakota State outscored Mount Marty 25-16 in the third period, thanks to Lady T's sizzling 52.6 percent shooting from the field (10-of-19 field goals).  The Lancers were held to 27.8 percent from the field (5-of-18 field goals).

DSU saw their deficit down to five points after a 3-pointer by Lindsey Vogl, trailing 60-55 with 7:20 left in the game.  The Lancers would regain their double-digit lead back to 12 points at 73-61 with 3:20 remaining and 75-63 with 2:32 left.

Dakota State could get no closer than five points at 77-72 with 46 seconds left.  The Lancers closed the game with an 8-3 run to secure the victory.

The Lady T's outscored the Lancers 28-25 in the fourth quarter and 53-41 in the second-half.  DSU shot a blazing 50 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes, making 20 baskets in 40 attempts.  MMC was limited to 32.1 percent from the field in the second-half (9-of-28 field goals).

Four DSU players scored in double digits, led by Britley Plautz with a double-double.  She scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season.  Jones added 11 points.  Raven Patton and Kennedy Wagner each added 10 points.  Criddle tallied eight points off the bench.  Shelby Vogel had seven points.

Plautz registered four blocks in the game for the Lady T's.  Wagner had three blocks.  Patton earned eight rebounds.  Jamie Tebben had six points and five rebounds.

Plautz, Wanger, Vogl and Tebben each recorded a steal for Dakota State.  Wagner contributed four assists.  Vogl had three assists.

Ali Kuca poured in 19 points off the bench for the Lancers.  She was 5-of-10 from the field, 4-of-6 from the 3-point line and converted 5-of-6 free-throws.  Castaneda added 16 points and collected nine rebounds.  Karlee McKinney had 11 points.  Karissa Chamley had 10 points.  Mikayla Prouty and Danielle Wieseler each scored eight points.

Molly Koisti led MMC with five assists.  Chamley stole the ball three times.  Castaneda had two blocked shots.

Dakota State shot 39.5 percent overall from the field (29-of-74) compared to Mount Marty 37.5 percent (24-of-64).  The Lancers drained 13 3-pointers in 30 tries (43.3 percent) while the Lady T's were 4-of-17 3-pointers (23.5 percent).

MMC made 21-of-27 free-throws (77.8 percent), with 17-of-23 free-throws coming in the second-half.  DSU was 13-of-19 from the free-throw line (68.4 percent).

The Lady T's outrebounded the Lancers 48-42.  DSU outscored MMC 13-8 in points off turnovers, 36-16 inside the paint and 16-6 in second-chance points. 

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they kick off their six-game North Star Athletic Association conference stretch on the road.  The Lady T's visit Viterbo (Wis.) Friday evening.  Tip-off from the R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis. is set for 5:30 p.m. 

On Saturday, DSU travels to Forest City, Iowa for another North Star contest at Waldorf (Iowa).  The game is slated for 3 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse.
