WESTWEGO, La. – Loyola (La.) used a pair of late comebacks as they complete a non-conference doubleheader baseball sweep over Dakota State (S.D.) Monday at Bayou Segnette Field. The Wolfpack won by the scores of 11-3 and 5-4.
Dakota State fell to 0-4 overall record. Loyola, a member of the Southern States Conference in the NAIA, lifted their overall record to 15-7.
The Trojans look to earn their first win of the season as they continue their action in Louisiana Tuesday. DSU plays another doubleheader at LSU-Alexandria at Generals Field in Alexandria, La.
Game 1 – Loyola (La.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
Dakota State could not hold on to their 3-1 lead after five-and-half innings in the first game of the doubleheader. Loyola racked up a total of ten runs in the bottom sixth inning to earn an 11-3 game one victory.
The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the top first inning. Jordan Hofer led off the game with a walk. He advanced to second base after Jalen Boyd's ground out. Dyshawn Proudlove produced an RBI double to score Hofer for DSU 1-0 lead.
Jesse Jordan blasted a solo home run to kick off the bottom fourth frame as Wolfpack knotted the game at 1-1.
DSU regained their lead with a run scored in the top fifth. Hayden Klibbe was hit-by-pitch. Christian Sanchez, courtesy runner for Klibbe, swiped to second base. A wild pitch by Loyola advanced Sanchez to third base. Boyd hit a two-out RBI single to score Sanchez to give Trojans a 2-1 lead.
Dakota State extended their lead to 3-1 with another run scored in the top sixth inning. Proudlove led off with a single. Alec Gannon, pinch hitter for Justin Oldum, hit a sacrifice bunt squeeze and advanced Proudlove to second base. Samuel Drummond recorded an RBI single to score Proudlove to give Trojans a two-run lead.
The Wolfpack exploded for a total of ten runs in the bottom sixth inning, highlighted by a pair of 2-RBI doubles by Ben Condara and Jordan along with a 2-RBI single by Tre Mouriz for an 11-3 lead.
The Trojans were unable to make a comeback in the final inning as LU secured the victory.
Proudlove was perfect at the plate, going 3-of-3 with two doubles, single and drove in a run for Dakota State. Boyd and Drummond each added two singles and an RBI. Hofer, Proudlove and Sanchez each scored a run. Proudlove, Sanchez and Drummond each swiped one base.
Jordan was 4-of-4 at the plate with a home run, double, two singles and registered three RBIs for Loyola. Condara and Mouriz each added a hit and two RBIs. Zachary Cook recorded two singles and an RBI. Allen Dennis had a hit and an RBI.
LU outhit DSU 11-7 in the game. The Trojans left four runners on base while the Wolfpack had three runners left on base.
Connor Nagel (L, 0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He worked for 5 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits. Jacob Yaeger came in the bottom sixth and gave up three runs on one hit. Trey Randel tossed the final two outs of the sixth inning, allowing two runs on three hits.
Spencer Rosenbohm started the game for Loyola. He pitched four innings and limited DSU to one hit on one hit. He recorded five strikeouts. Shaun Prats came in the fifth inning and gave up a run on one hit. Lawrence Frishberg (W, 1-0) earned the victory after working two innings in relief and allowed a run on one hit. A.J. Smith tossed a shutout seventh inning in relief.
Game 2 – Loyola (La.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
After a scoreless first inning in the second game of the doubleheader, Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game after scoring twice in the top second frame. Proudlove and Nagel led off with back-to-back walks for the Trojans. Marcos Alvarez recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Proudlove to third base and Nagel to second base.
Drummond produced an RBI ground out to score Proudlove to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the top second (Nagel advanced to third base). After Klibbe reached on base by a walk with two outs, Zach Sutera hit an RBI single to score Nagel to balloon DSU's lead to 2-0.
Condara blasted a solo home run to kick off the bottom second frame as the Wolfpack trimmed DSU's lead to 2-1.
Dakota State added a run in the top fourth inning to widen their lead to 3-1. Drummond hit a single up the middle with two outs. He swiped to second base. Klibbe hit an RBI single to score Drummond as the Trojans maintain a two-run lead over the Wolfpack.
Loyola tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom fourth after Cook's 2-RBI double.
DSU regained their lead in the top fifth inning. Hofer led off with a walk. Sanchez, courtesy runner for Hofer advanced to second base after Boyd's single. Sanchez was caught stealing at third base, while Boyd advanced to second base. Proudlove drilled an RBI double to left-center, scoring Boyd for DSU 4-3 lead.
John Hernandez hit an RBI single in the bottom sixth inning for the second tie of the game at 4-4.
The Trojans were unable to score in the top seventh frame.
Charlie Seiter opened up with a single for the Wolfpack in the bottom seventh inning. A balk was committed by the Trojans to allow Seiter advance to second base with one out. Condara reached on base by an intentional walk.
Michael Toscano reached first on fielder's choice as Seiter advanced to third and Condara was out at second base for LU. Mick Dubic produced a walk-off RBI single to score Seiter, securing the win for the Wolfpack.
Proudlove had a double and an RBI for Dakota State. Drummond and Sutera each added two singles and an RBI. Klibbie had a hit and an RBI. Hofer and Boyd each registered a single. Drummond swiped one base.
Condara went 2-of-2 at the plate with a home run, single and an RBI for Loyola. Cook added a double and drove in two runs. Dubic and John Hernandez each had a hit and an RBI.
DSU outhit LU 8-7. The Wolfpack left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base. Defensively, Loyola produced two double plays while Dakota State had one double play (Smith Kemper, Boyd, Nagel).
Hunter Hazen started the game on the pitching mound for DSU. He worked for four innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He struck out three LU's batters. Trae Ramsey pitched two innings in relief, giving up a run on two hits. Proudlove (L, 0-2) recorded the loss after working for two outs in the bottom seventh (allowed a run on two hits).
Alexander Acevedo pitched four innings for LU. He gave up three runs on five hits. Kyle Higginbotham tossed two innings in relief, allowing a run on three hits. Brendon Taravella (W, 1-1) pitched a shutout top seventh inning, striking out all three DSU's batters to earn the victory.
