FARGO, N.D. – NCAA Division I North Dakota State scored at least two runs in the first six innings, racing to a 16-0 lead over Dakota State (S.D.) in the non-conference baseball action at Newman Outdoor Field Wednesday evening. The Bison defeated the Trojans by the score of 16-1.
Dakota State fell to 4-24 overall record. North Dakota State improved their overall record to 15-18.
The Bison scored three times in the opening inning, highlighted by Jayse McLean's 2-RBI triple to give NDSU a 3-0 lead. North Dakota State never looked back as they scored twice in the bottom second inning for a 5-0 lead.
Sean Noel drilled a 2-RBI double to balloon NDSU's lead to 16-0 in the bottom sixth inning.
Dakota State scored once in the top ninth inning. Micah DeHarty led off with a walk. Smith Kemper followed up with an RBI double to score DeHarty, trimming NDSU's lead to 16-1.
The Trojans left the bases full when the game ended, despite a single by Zach Sutera and a walk by Derek Degnan.
Kemper finished the game by going 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and an RBI for DSU. Alec Gannon, Sutera, Samuel Drummond, Degnan and Jordan Hofer each had a single. DeHarty scored a run and walked once. Gannon and Degnan each recorded a walk. Sutera swiped one base.
McLean was 3-of-3 at the plate with a home run, triple, single and drove in a game-high four RBIs. Drew Fearing added three hits and three RBIs. Carter Thompson tallied a double and three RBIs. Nick Emanuel had two hits and an RBI. Noel recorded a double and two RBIs.
NDSU recorded 11 hits in the game compared to DSU seven hits. The Bison left eight runners on base, while the Trojans left seven runners on base.
Kyle Grant (L, 0-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He tossed two innings and gave up five runs on five hits. Tyler Stading, Tristan Smith, Trey Randel, Kyle Gosh, Garrison Collier and Hunter Hazen also pitched in the game for the Trojans.
Zach Smith (W, 2-0) earned the victory after pitching three scoreless innings for North Dakota State. He limited DSU to three hits. The Bison used six different pitchers in relief.
Dakota State heads into the final weekend of North Star Athletic Association conference play this weekend. The Trojans play in the NSAA Triangular with No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) and Viterbo (Wis.) at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D. The triangular kicks off with DSU-VU at 1 p.m. on Friday and will face UJ in the nightcap at 6 p.m. All games will be seven innings.
