JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Dakota State (S.D.) University Trojan Baseball team returned back to the North Star Athletic Association conference action, heading into the final weekend of regular-season play. Viterbo (Wis.) kicked off the North Star's Triangular, hosted by No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.), by shutting down the Trojans by the score of 6-0 Friday afternoon at Jack Brown Stadium.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 4-25 and 4-14 NSAA conference record. Viterbo improved their overall record to 11-36 and 8-10 record in league play.
The V-Hawks earned the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning. Noah Bouley reached on base by a walk. Evan Wenberg followed up with an RBI double to score Bouley for VU 1-0 lead. Wenberg swiped to third base with two outs.
Viterbo made it 2-0 after Brad Giss produced an RBI single to score Wenberg in the bottom first.
Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the top second inning, despite a double by Dyshawn Proudlove.
The V-Hawks scored three times in the bottom fifth to extend their lead to 5-0, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles by Adam Lowe and DJ Wilson. Viterbo made it 6-0 in the bottom sixth frame after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans.
DSU left a runner on third base when the game ended, securing the victory for VU.
Adrian Butrimas and Connor Nagel each went 2-of-2 at the plate for Dakota State. Proudlove added a single. Marcos Alvarez recorded a single. Nagel and Alvarez each reached on base by a walk.
Wenberg and Wilson each went 2-of-4 at the plate with an RBI for Viterbo. Giss and Lowe each added a hit and an RBI. Billy Young produced an RBI. Adam Klos recorded two stolen bases.
The V-Hawks left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans seven runners left on base.
Garrison Collier (L, 1-5) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed five innings and allowed five runs (two unearned) on seven hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Trey Randel worked the sixth inning in relief, giving up a run on one hit.
Kyle Gilbertson (W, 5-5) earned the victory for VU. He pitched six innings and limited the Trojans to six hits. Dante Selke tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Dakota State awaits to play No. 16-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) in the nightcap Friday evening. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Viterbo plays Jamestown in the second game of the NSAA Triangular Friday at 3:30 p.m.
