DSU football falls on road to Waldorf (Iowa)

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) opened with a quick 3-0 lead over Waldorf (Iowa) in the opening quarter of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association football conference contest at Bolstorff Field.  The Warriors then scored 52 straight points through the early fourth quarter and rolled past the Trojans by the score of 59-9.

DSU dropped their second straight game, falling to 3-4 overall record and 1-3 NSAA conference record.  WU earned their third straight victory, raising their overall record to 5-2 and 3-1 record in league games.  The Warriors also won their third straight meeting over the Trojans, while DSU holds a 6-4 all-time series record.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Waldorf fumbled the ball and committed a turnover on the opening kick-off by Dakota State's Casey BourqueMorgan Vande Brake recovered the fumble on WU's 14-yard line, giving possession of the ball for DSU with 14 minutes, 55 seconds on the clock.
  • The Trojans converted a first-down on third-and-10 situation, where Torren Devericks connected to Dajshon Keel for a 10-yard pass to WU's 14-yard line.  DSU had to settle for a 31-yard field goal by Joshua Snook to give Dakota State a 3-0 lead with 12:15 on the clock.
  • The Warriors quickly scored on the ensuing possession as Hilton Joseph threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Conlon.  Slater Gifford followed up with a PAT extra-point kick to give Waldorf a 7-3 lead with 10:07 to go in the first.
  • DSU was forced to punt on the next possession.  The Warriors added another quick score as Joseph connected to Ryan Martinez for a 39-yard touchdown pass.  Gifford hit a successful PAT extra-point to widen Warriors' lead to 14-3 with 5:48 on the clock.
  • The Trojans went three-and-out on the following possession, forcing to punt for the second straight possession.  The Warriors rolled to another score near the end of the first quarter, thanks to a pair of 10-plus plays (13-yard pass from Joseph to Sam Epenesa and a 21-yard rush by Jeff Jones).
  • Jones rushed for a 7-yard touchdown to balloon WU's lead to 20-3 with 55 seconds left.  Gifford's PAT extra-point kick was good to extend their lead to 21-3.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Waldorf scored on their fourth straight possession as Jones rushed for a 4-yard touchdown run.  The Warriors made it 28-3 after Gifford's successful PAT extra-point kick with 11:48 left in the second quarter.
  • Dakota State moved the ball to the Warriors' territory, thanks to a 34-yard pass from Devericks to Roger Moore for a first-down on WU's 41-yard line.  The Trojans added another first-down on WU's 31-yard line but was unable to convert the fourth-down opportunity on WU's 29-yard line with 8:22 on the clock.
  • The Warriors continued its scoring surge as they scored another touchdown on the next possession.  Joseph threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Treyvon Brinson with 6:02 remaining before halftime.  Gifford kicked the PAT extra-point kick to extend Waldorf's lead to 35-3 with 6:02 left in the second quarter.
  • Dakota State used 10 plays for 35 yards in 4:31 but turned the ball on downs on WU's 33-yard line with 1:29 left.  The highlights of the drive included an 11-yard reception by Josh Giese, followed by a 28-yard pass from Devericks to Moore.
  • Waldorf led 35-3 by halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER

  • After the Trojans were forced to punt on the first drive of the second-half, the Warriors marched down the field by using 7 plays for 61 yards in 4:48 to score their sixth touchdown of the game.  Jones ran for a 1-yard touchdown, followed by PAT extra-point kick by Gifford to make it 42-3 in favor of Waldorf with 9:16 on the clock.
  • WU's James Jackson intercepted DSU Devericks' pass on DSU's 32-yard line and returned it for nine yards to DSU's 23-yard line with 8:37 on the clock.  The Warriors answered with a 44-yard field goal by Gifford to widen their lead to 45-3 with 7:01 to go in the third.
  • Waldorf scored another touchdown in the third quarter, thanks to three plays of over 10 yards.  Jones rushed for 13 yards, while Joseph threw a 30-yard pass to Ryan Harrison to DSU's 16-yard line.  Joseph hit a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Martinez with 3:46 left.  Gifford made it 52-3 after converting the PAT extra-point kick.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Dakota State ended their scoring drought with 11 plays for 65 yards in 4:22 (from the ensuing possession in the late third quarter through the early fourth quarter).  Brodie Frederiksen rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 14:17 remaining.  Snook missed the PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans trailed 52-9. 
  • Waldorf made it 59-9 as Drew Buckholdt returned a 68-yard interception for a touchdown with 10:36 remaining, followed by Gifford's PAT extra-point kick.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Devericks was 11-of-28 for 116 yards for the Trojans.  Jackson Kinzer added 7-of-17 for 133 yards.  Moore led DSU with seven catches for a game-high 121 yards.  Jacob Hirsch added two catches for 46 yards.  Alec Bultje had a reception for 38 yards.  Keel recorded three catches for 38 yards.
  • Frederiksen rushed 15 times for 38 yards and a touchdown for DSU.  Kinzer added five rushes for 15 yards.
  • Caleb Nielsen registered five punts for 191 yards (38.2 yards per punt).  He had a long punt of 44 yards.
  • Marcus Vanden Bosch led Dakota State's defense with eight tackles (4 solo, 4 assist).  Noah Guse added seven tackles.  Cole McCarty had six tackles.  Wyatt Sanford tallied five tackles. 
  • Joseph finished the game making 13 passes in 18 attempts for 248 yards and threw five touchdown passes for the Warriors.  Martinez had four receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns.  Harrison added three catches for 69 yards.  Conlon and Brinson each also had a touchdown catch.
  • Jones ran 18 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns for WU.  Joseph added four rushes for 62 yards.
  • Caleb Wilson led Waldorf's defense with nine tackles.  He also had a quarterback sack.  Logan Knutson tallied seven tackles.  James Bell recorded two sacks for loss of 13 yards.  Thomas Edwards also had a sack. 

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Waldorf piled up a total of 569 offensive yards compared to Dakota State 311 offensive yards.  The Warriors recorded 300 passing yards and 269 rushing yards.  The Trojans had 249 passing yards and 62 rushing yards.
  • WU produced 27 first-downs in the game, while DSU had 20 first-downs.  DSU was 6-of-18 on third-downs compared to WU 2-of-7 third-down conversions.
  • The Trojans had a time possession of 32 minutes, 9 seconds.  The Warriors had the ball for 27 minutes, 51 seconds.

Dakota State stays on the road next Saturday (Oct. 26) for another Dacotah Bank/NSAA Football conference action.  The Trojans travel to Jerome Berg Field to take on Mayville State (N.D.).  Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. in Mayville, N.D.
