Frederiksen becomes all-time rushing leader, fuels DSU to 35-14 road win

MAYVILLE, N.D. Brodie Frederiksen eclipsed over 1,000 rushing yards for the second consecutive year and became the all-time Dakota State's (S.D.) rushing leader, fueling the Trojans to a 35-14 Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association football conference road victory over Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday afternoon at Jerome Berg Field.  After holding a 21-14 halftime lead, the Trojans shut down the Comets 14-0 in the final thirty minutes of the game.

DSU, who made their third straight year trip to Jerome Berg Field, had won their fourth straight meeting with MSU and improved their all-time series record to 17-14.  The Trojans also earned its first road win of the season, their first road win since Oct. 20, 2018 which was also at Mayville State. 

Dakota State returned to .500 with an overall record of 4-4.  The Trojans are 2-3 record in the North Star conference games.  Mayville State lost their fourth straight game, falling to 2-6 overall record and 1-4 NSAA conference record.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Dakota State opened the game on their own 32-yard line.  Facing a third-and-one situation, Torren Devericks fired a 44-yard pass to Roger Moore for a first-down on MSU's 15-yard line.  Two plays later, Comet Timothy Rooks intercepted Devericks' pass and returned it for a 90-yard touchdown.  Mayville State grabbed a 6-0 lead with twelve minutes and forty-three seconds on the clock, despite failing their 2-point PAT attempt.
  • With DSU ball on MSU's 33-yard line with a fourth-down situation and 14 yards to go, Frederiksen exploded for 28 yards that resulted a first-down on MSU's 5-yard line.  He rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to tie the game at 6-6 with 2:11 on the clock in the first period.  The PAT extra-point kick by Joshua Snook was good as Dakota State earned a 7-6 lead.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Mayville State kicked off the second quarter with a 35-yard touchdown rush by Creighton Pfau with 14:50 on the clock.  The 2-point PAT attempt was successful when Reese Hanson connected to Joshua Portillo to give the Comets a 14-6 lead.
  • DSU's Noah Guse intercepted MSU's pass on DSU's 46-yard line with 11:14 to go before halftime.  It was his third interception this season for the Trojans.
  • Dakota State would answer with four plays for 54 yards in 44 seconds for a touchdown after the interception.  Devericks connected to Moore for a 35-yard pass, followed by a 11-yard touchdown rush by Frederiksen.  Snook's PAT extra point kick was successful as the Trojans knotted the game at 14-14 with 10:30 remaining in the third.
  • DSU added another score late in the second quarter, thanks to 11 plays for 80 yards in 5:12 in the scoring drive.  The Trojans produced six first-downs in the scoring drive.  Devericks threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Justin Folkers (his first career collegiate football touchdown) with 2:20 left before halftime.  Snook followed up with the PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans regained their lead to 21-14.
  • DSU's defense halted the Comets from scoring by the end of the second quarter, ending on DSU's 32-yard line.  Dakota State outscored Mayville State 14-8 in the second quarter.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Mayville State went three-and-out to kick off the third quarter.  Dakota State quickly scored on the ensuing possession as Devericks connected to Frederiksen for a 59-yard touchdown with 11:37 on the clock.  Snook added the PAT extra-point kick to extend Trojans' lead to 28-14.
  • Riley Janke recorded a forced fumble on MSU's Keon Suber and was recovered by Cole McCarty as the Trojans prevented the Comets from scoring on DSU's 19-yard line with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • Mayville State committed another turnover on the next possession after DSU's punt.  Karson Lindblad intercepted Pfau's pass on MSU's 45-yard line with 2:16 on the clock in the third.
  • Frederiksen tied the DSU's all-time school record (3,339 rushing yards by Jeff Rodman) after a 1-yard rush on the fourth-and-1 situation on MSU's 36-yard line and resulted a first-down on MSU's 35-yard line.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Janke intercepted Pfau's pass on DSU's 40-yard with less than 12 minutes to go in the game.  Frederiksen would follow up with a 45-yard rushing touchdown, breaking a 40-plus year-old all-time rushing yards held by Rodman from 1973-76.  Snook added the PAT extra-point kick as Dakota State widen their lead to 35-14 with 11:10 remaining.
  • Mayville State was held scoreless since 14:50 of the second quarter, securing the victory for Dakota State.  The Trojans outscored the Comets 28-0 after trailing 14-7.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Frederiksen finished the game with 18 rushes for a total of 141 rushing yards for Dakota State.  He had three rushing touchdowns.  He also had 59-yard reception for a touchdown.  Frederiksen surpassed Jeff Rodman's all-time school record rushing yards with 3,391 yards.  It was the sixth time this season that he had rushed over 100 yards.  Frederiksen also recorded at least a touchdown in all eight games this season.
  • Frederiksen finished the game with 254 all-purpose yards (141 rushing yards, 59 receiving yards and 54 kick-off return yards).
  • Devante Luellman added six rushes for 27 yards.  Jose Sanchez had four rushes for 20 yards.
  • Devericks finished the game by going 13-of-22 for 202 yards with two touchdowns for DSU.  Moore had four catches for 89 yards.  Alec Bultje added three receptions for 27 yards. 
  • Lindblad sparked the Trojans' defense with nine tackles (4 solo, 5 assist), 1.5 tackles-for-loss of 2.5 yards and an interception.  Jordan Thomas added eight tackles (4 solo, 4 assist).  Marcus Vanden Bosch had eight tackles and a quarterback sack.
  • Janke collected seven tackles, an interception and a forced fumble for Dakota State.  McCarty added seven tackles, two quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery.  Braedon Wallenstein had 1.5 quarterback sacks for 15 yards loss.  John Trout had six tackles and 0.5 sack.  Guse had an interception. 
  • Pfau led the Comets' offense with 21-of-39 for 199 passing yards and rushed 21 times for 83 yards with a touchdown.  Suber added six rushes for 25 yards.  Joshua Portillo caught five passes for 58 yards.  Hanson had four catches for 42 yards.  Darrell Wilson had four catches for 34 yards.
  • Josiah Walker tallied 18 tackles for MSU's defense (7 solo, 11 assist).  He also had a sack and a forced fumble.  Austin DeLaroque added 11 tackles.  Dorian Duchene and Austin Robb each had a quarterback sack.  Rooks returned a 90-yard interception for a touchdown.

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Dakota State outgained Mayville State 427-304 in total offensive yards.  The Trojans had 225 rushing yards and 202 passing yards compared to the Comets 105 rushing yards and 199 passing yards.
  • DSU produced 21 first-downs in the game, while MSU had 20 first-downs.  The Trojans converted 9-of-17 on third-down situations compared to the Comets 6-of-15 third-downs.
  • Mayville State was whistled for 11 penalties for a total of 115 yards.  Dakota State had seven penalties for 75 yards.

UP NEXT

Dakota State returns home for one final time next Saturday (Nov. 2).  The Trojans host the conference tri-leaders Valley City State (N.D.), who upset No. 13-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) 23-22 Saturday in Valley City.  Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.  Seniors will be honored at least 20 minutes prior to kick-off.

Valley City State won the first NSAA conference meeting this season by the score of 10-6 in Valley City on Sept. 28.
