HASTINGS, Neb. – Concordia (Neb.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference drained a total of 19 3-pointers Friday evening, rolling past Dakota State (S.D.) 93-60 on the first day of the C3 Hotel Men's Basketball Classic at Lynn Farrell Arena. The Bulldogs never trailed in the game, securing their season-opener victory.
Dakota State fell to 0-2 overall record on the season. The Trojans look to earn their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they play the host-team Hastings (Neb.) on the second day of the tournament.
Concordia (Neb.) 93, Dakota State (S.D.) 60 – FINAL
- Concordia opened with a 5-0 run after a 3-pointer by Brevin Sloup and a basket by Chuol Biel. The Trojans ended the scoring drought after a pair of free-throws by Josh McGreal with seventeen minutes and twenty seconds on the clock in the first-half (DSU trailed 6-2).
- A 3-pointer by Gare Ewefada reduced Trojans' deficit to 8-7 with 16:12 on the clock.
- Leading 13-11, the Bulldogs went on a 17-2 scoring outburst to widen their lead to 30-13 with 10:48 remaining before halftime. CUNE went 6-of-7 from the field, including draining four 3-pointers in five tries during the scoring run.
- Ewefada made two free-throws with just few seconds before halftime as the Trojans trailed 45-27.
- Concordia shot 56.7 percent from the field (17-of-30, including 9-of-20 from the 3-point arc in the first-half. Dakota State was held to 5-of-17 field goals (29.4 percent) and 1-of-7 from the 3-point line. The Trojans converted 16 free-throws in 20 attempts (80 percent).
- CUNE maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game, leading as many as 38 points at 93-55 with 2:08 remaining. The Bulldogs outscored the Trojans 48-33 in the second-half.
- Concordia shot 19-of-36 from the field (52.8 percent) and hit 10 3-pointers in 22 attempts (45.5 percent) in the second-half. Dakota State was 11-of-23 field goals (47.8 percent) and 2-of-5 3-pointers. DSU was 9-of-13 from the free-throw line.
- Four players scored in double digits for the Trojans, led by McGreal with 18 points (6-of-10 field goals and 5-of-6 free-throws). Sawyer Koch added 11 points (7-of-8 free-throws). Ewefada and Anthony Costello each scored 10 points. Ewefada was 7-of-10 from the free-throw line.
- Koch and Shaq Russell each dished out two assists for Dakota State. McGreal, Ewefada, Brady Van Holland, Cody Muilenburg, Russell and Gavin Schipper each recorded a steal. McGreal and Ewefada each grabbed four rebounds.
- Fourteen different Bulldog players scored in the game, paced by Sloup with a game-high 24 points on his 9-of-13 field goal shooting and 6-of-10 from the 3-point arc. Carter Kent, Sam Scarpelli and Ryan Holt each added nine points.
- Tanner Shuck produced four assists for Concordia. Biel pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and registered two blocked shots. He also had two steals.
- Concordia shot a sizzling 54.5 percent overall from the field, converting 36 shots in 66 attempts. The Bulldogs were 19-of-42 from the 3-point line (45.2 percent). Dakota State was 40 percent overall from the field (16-of-40 field goals) and 3-of-12 3-pointers.
- Dakota State made 25 free-throws in 33 attempts (75.8 percent). Concordia was 2-of-5 free-throws.
- The Bulldogs outrebounded the Trojans 35-21 in the game.
