HASTINGS, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) shot a blazing season-high 57.6 percent from the field Saturday afternoon, despite falling short to host-team Hastings (Neb.) 99-84 on the second day of the C3 Hotel Classic at Lynn Farrell Arena. It was the second straight game that the Trojans had faced an opponent from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-3. Hastings went undefeated in the tournament play with a 2-0 record.
DSU looks to record their first win of the season as they return home Wednesday evening. The Trojans take on another Great Plains Athletic Conference foe, Midland (Neb.). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse as part of Halloween Costume Party.
Hastings (Neb.) 99, Dakota State (S.D.) 84 – FINAL
- Shane Chamberlain hit a 3-pointer to give Hastings a 3-0 lead with 19 minutes, 11 seconds on the clock. The Trojans cut their deficit to 3-2 after Shaq Russell's basket with less than 19 minutes to go.
- The Broncos went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 9-2 with 16:51 left in the first-half. The Trojans rallied back to cut HC's lead to 15-13 after a field goal by Josh McGreal with 13:08 on the clock (as part of DSU's 11-4 scoring run).
- Hastings recorded the first double-digit lead of the game at 38-28 after a 3-pointer by Bart Hiscock with less than four minutes before halftime.
- Cole Bruhn drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Gare Ewefada) by the halftime buzzer as the Trojans trimmed the Broncos' lead by 49-40.
- Dakota State shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first-half (17-of-32 field goals) compared to Hastings 52.5 percent (21-of-40 field goals).
- McGreal kicked off the second-half with a basket as the Trojans reduced their deficit to seven points at 49-42 with 19:42 left.
- The Broncos then went on a 10-0 scoring tear to expand their lead to 59-42 with less than 18 minutes left in the game. Hastings was 4-of-5 from the field during the scoring run.
- HC maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game, securing the victory. The Broncos outscored the Trojans 50-44 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
- Hastings shot 19-of-39 from the field (48.7 percent), including 10-of-22 from the 3-point line (45.5 percent). Dakota State shot a sizzling 63 percent from the field (17-of-27 field goals) and 3-of-5 3-pointers.
- Costello posted a double-double of 21 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds for the Trojans. He was 8-of-14 from the field and converted 5-of-6 free-throws. McGreal added 18 points on his 7-of-12 field goal shooting and 4-of-5 free-throws. Bruhn tallied 15 points (6-of-7 field goals and went perfect 3-of-3 from the 3-point arc). Ewefada scored 13 points.
- Gavin Schipper scored seven points, dished out four assists and recorded a steal for Dakota State. McGreal earned five rebounds and recorded three blocked shots. He also had a steal.
- Hiscock poured in a game-high 31 points on his 13-of-22 field goal shooting and 4-of-9 3-pointers for the Broncos. Brendan Lipovsky added 12 points (6-of-8 field goals). Chamberlain scored 11 points, while Mason Hiemstra added 10 points.
- Logan Cale scored eight points and produced five assists for Hastings. Hiemstra and Lipovsky each stole the ball three times.
- Dakota State was 34-of-59 field goals compared to Hastings 40-of-79 field goals (50.6 percent). The Broncos drained 15 3-poitners in 38 tries while the Trojans were 6-of-11 3-pointers.
- DSU outrebounded HC 34-27 in the game. The Broncos outscored the Trojans 33-7 in points off turnovers.
