Saints sweep Trojans in NSAA baseball action in Ralston, Neb.

RALSTON, Neb. – Presentation (S.D.) cruised to a 19-2 eight-inning victory in the North Star Athletic Association baseball four-game series opener Sunday afternoon at Orval Smith Field.  The Saints held off Trojans' late comeback in the second game of the series by the score of 4-3 to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-25 and 1-15 NSAA conference record.  Presentation improved to 16-15 overall record and 7-6 record in league play.

Both teams will finish off their four-game series Monday with another doubleheader at Orval Smith Field.  The first game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Game 1 – Presentation (S.D.) 19, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/8 innings

Presentation blasted a total of six home runs in the NSAA four-game series opener.

Jesse Spangler led off the game with a home run to give PC a 1-0 lead.

The Saints added two home runs in the top third inning to produce a four-run inning, thanks to a 2-run home run by Kyle Showalter and a solo home run by Jace Wyatt to balloon their lead to 5-0.

PC made it 6-0 after a solo home run by Johnny Radomskiy in the top third.

The Trojans ended their scoring drought in the bottom third with a run scored.  Ryan Jackovich led off with a double.  Keaton Hoeke reached safely on base after PC's defensive error and advanced Jackovich to third base.  Chris Burke recorded an RBI ground out to score Jackovich as the Trojans trailed 6-1.

Presentation produced two runs in the top fifth inning.  With bases loaded situation, Kyle Showalter hit a 2-RBI single to widen PC's lead to 8-1.  The Saints added a run in the top sixth inning to make it 9-1.

The Saints exploded for 10 runs in the top eighth inning to expand their lead to 19-1, highlighted by Radomskiy's grand slam and a 2-run home run by Wyatt.

Alec Gannon hit a single with one out in the bottom eighth.  Kyle Gosh added a single with two outs and advanced Gannon to third base.  Noah Hammond produced an RBI single to score Gannon (DSU trailed 19-2).  The Trojans left bases full when the game ended, securing the victory for the Saints.

Jackovich had a double for Dakota State.  Gannon, Samuel Drummond, Gosh, Marcos Alvarez, Justin Odlum and Hoeke each had a hit.  Hammond had a single and an RBI.  Burke collected an RBI. 

Radomskiy finished the game with a pair of home runs and drove in five runs for Presentation.  Wyatt added two home runs and three RBIs.  Showalter also had a home run, single and tallied four RBIs.  Spangler had a home run, double, single and two RBIs.  Zane Hunt and Kyle Agielski each had a hit and an RBI.  Angel Fars had three hits.

PC outhit DSU 17-9 in the game.  The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Saints six runners left on base.

Adam Berryhill (L, 0-3) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for 4 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.  He struck out four PC's batters.  Andrew Dayton, Logan Dexter, Matt Weichel and Jared Urbach also pitched in relief.

Chris D'Amico (W, 3-2) tossed a complete game victory for Presentation.  He gave up two runs on nine hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Game 2 – Presentation (S.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

Presentation earned a 4-0 lead after four-and-half innings before Dakota State mounted a comeback in the second game of the four-game series.  The Trojans scored a run in the final three innings of the seven-inning game, but fell short by the score of 4-3.

Radomskiy smashed a solo home run in the top second frame to give Presentation a 1-0 lead.

Spangler led off the top third with a single for PC.  He advanced to second base after Hunt's ground out.  Wyatt hit an RBI single to score Spangler to widen Saints' lead to 2-0.

Gilbert Aguilar hit an RBI single, while Showalter added an RBI walk to make it 4-0 in favor of Presentation in the top fifth inning.

Dakota State hit three straight singles with two outs in the bottom fifth to produce the first run of the game.  Hoeke started with a single and swiped to second base.  Burke added a single and advanced Hoeke to third base.  Jalen Boyd hit an RBI single to score Hoeke as the Trojans trailed 4-1.

DSU added a run in the bottom sixth inning to trim PC's lead down by two runs.  Drummond led off with a single.  He advanced to second base after a wild pitch by the Saints.  Tanner Landman hit a ground out to short shop and advanced Drummond to third base.  Drummond scored home after another wild pitch committed by PC (DSU trailed 4-2).

Hoeke kicked off the bottom seventh with a single for the Trojans.  A wild pitch by the Saints advanced Hoeke to second base.  Boyd hit a ground out to second base, advancing Hoeke to third base.  Jerrett Plunkett reached safely on base caused by Saints' defensive error, allowing Hoeke to score as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 4-3.

Dakota State was unable to convert another scoring chance in the final inning, securing the victory for Presentation. 

Alvarez was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for the Trojans.  Boyd had a single and an RBI.  Hoeke was 2-of-2 with a double, single and scored two runs.  He swiped one base.  Burke, Drummond and Christian Sanchez each collected a single.

Radomskiy had a home run, single and drove in an RBI for the Saints.  Faras added a double and single.  Wyatt had two hits and an RBI.  Aguilar recorded a hit and an RBI.

Both teams had eight hits in the game.  PC left nine runners on base while DSU left seven runners on base.

Ryan Peterson (L, 0-3) recorded the defeat on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits.  He recorded three strikeouts.  Micah DeHarty tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding the Saints to one hit.

Colin Crandall (W, 4-2) posted the victory after pitching five innings for Presentation.  He allowed one run on six hits.  CJ Canfield worked for one-plus inning in relief, giving up two runs (one unearned) on two hits.  Austin Crain (S, 1) closed out the game in the seventh inning for his first save of the season.
