SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) grabbed a 7-0 halftime lead Saturday afternoon in the non-conference football game versus host-team Briar Cliff (Iowa) at Memorial Field. The Chargers outscored the Trojans 13-3 in the final thirty minutes of the game, holding on to a 13-10 victory.
It was the first defeat of the year for DSU, while BCU earned its first victory of the season. Both teams are 1-1 overall record.
FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams were unable to score in the first 15 minutes of the game.
- After the Trojans went three-and-out, the Chargers began their drive on DSU's 40-yard line. BCU was unable to score as they turned the ball on downs on DSU's 20-yard line.
- When Dakota State was forced to punt, BCU fumbled the ball on their own 35-yard line and was recovered by Mahdi Benalshaikh with 8:35 to go in the first quarter. The Trojans were unable to take advantage of the turnover as they turned the ball on downs on BCU's 30-yard line with 7:08 on the clock.
SECOND QUARTER
- The game was halted with less than eight minutes left in the second quarter due to lightning. The game resumed at 2:25 p.m. with BCU's possession
- After an 8-yard punt by the Chargers, the Trojans began their drive on BCU's 26-yard line with 5:03 on the clock. Brodie Frederiksen rushed for two straight plays for the Trojans. He rushed for four yards and marched down in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown run to give DSU its first of the game.
- Casey Bourque followed up with the PAT extra point kick to give DSU a 7-0 lead with 4:23 remaining in the first half.
- The Trojans' defense until prevented the Chargers to score as they turned the ball on downs on DSU's 47-yard line with just less than a minute-and-half left before intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
- Briar Cliff quickly kicked off the third quarter with a touchdown, thanks to 54-yard touchdown run by Jordan Williams. Nick Manthana's PAT extra-point kick was no good as the Trojans held on to a 7-6 lead with 13:49 on the clock.
- Dakota State had to settle down for a field goal late in the third quarter after using over 10 plays, starting on their own 48-yard line. The highlights of the scoring drive included 20-yard pass from Torren Devericks to Josh Giles, 13- and 8-yard rushes by Frederiksen, and a 10-yard reception by Josh Giese from Devericks to the BCU's 6-yard line.
- Bourque hit a 28-yard field goal as DSU extended their lead to 10-6 with 2:17 on the clock.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Briar Cliff used 12 plays for 71 yards in less than four minutes as they overtook the lead from Dakota State. Stanton Lee rushed for a 12-yard touchdown, followed by Manthana's PAT extra-point kick to grab a 13-10 lead with 9:59 remaining.
- Dakota State recorded 12 plays for 59 yards in 5:53 on the ensuing possession. The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunity, turning the ball on downs on BCU's 30-yard line with less than four minutes left in the game.
- The Chargers were forced to punt on the next drive and secured the victory after their defense halted the Trojans on DSU's 26-yard line with 1:40 remaining.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Frederiksen rushed 21 times for 107 yards with a touchdown for the Trojans. He averaged 5.1 yards per rush and registered 100-plus rushing yards for the second straight game. Brenner Furlong added four rushes for 21 yards.
- Devericks completed nine passes in 29 throws for 70 yards for DSU. Giese caught two passes for 26 yards. Adeon Patterson added two catches for 14 yards. Giles had a reception for 20 yards.
- Bourque added a field goal for Dakota State, where he remained perfect on field goals this season by going 3-for-3.
- Karson Lindblad had a career-high 17 tackles (6 solo, 11 assist) for the Trojans. Cole McCarty added nine tackles. Braedon Wallenstein and Marcus Vanden Bosch each tallied seven tackles.
- Wallenstein recorded his first career interception and returned it for two yards for DSU.
- Lee racked up a total of 122 yards in 29 rushing attempts with a touchdown for the Chargers. Williams added 13 rushes for 99 yards and a touchdown.
- Jonathan Santos was 11-of-19 for 96 passing yards for BCU. Khamr Davenport caught seven passes for 85 yards.
- Markel Roby led Briar Cliff's defense with nine tackles. Robert Robinson added eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss of 11 yards and a quarterback sack. Asi Tupua also had a sack.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Briar Cliff piled up a total of 328 offensive yards in the game and held Dakota State to 189 offensive yards. The Chargers rushed 48 times for a total of 232 yards compared to the Trojans 38 rushes for 119 yards. BCU recorded 96 passing yards while DSU had 70 passing yards.
- BCU converted 7-of-15 on third-down conversions. DSU was 3-of-16 on third-down situations.
UP NEXT
Dakota State takes a week off before returning back to action in the annual Trojan Day homecoming football game on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Trojans host NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the second all-time meeting. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Trojan Field (with the tailgate area opening at 12 p.m. after the Trojan Day homecoming parade on Egan Ave.).
